Abstract

In one aspect of the present invention, a pick assembly is configured that comprises a pick shank configured to be press fit directly within a bore of a block. The pick shank comprises an inside and outside surface. The pick comprises a pick head opposite the shank. The shank comprises at least one longitudinal recess extending towards the pick head along the shank from a distal end of the shank. The recess allows the shank to resiliently collapse upon insertion into the bore while maintaining a press fit between the bore and the shank.

Claims (25)

1 . A pick assembly comprising:

a block mounted to a driving mechanism, the block comprising a bore configured to receive a pick shank;

the bore comprising an inner and outer surface;

the bore comprising a forward end and a rearward end, the rearward end being disposed closer to the driving mechanism;

the block comprising at least one longitudinal recess extending along a length of the bore;

wherein the recess is configured to resiliently expand the bore upon insertion of the shank while forming a press fit between the bore and the shank.

2 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the block comprises a tapered region on the inner surface of the bore and is configured to abut a tapered region on an outside surface of the pick shank, wherein the tapered regions are complementary.

3 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the tapered bore region and the tapered shank region are configured to increase surface to surface contact when the pick shank is received into the bore.

4 . The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the tapered bore region and the tapered shank region are configured to increase friction between the inner surface of the bore and the outside surface of the received pick shank.

5 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the received pick shank is substantially stationary with respect to the bore.

6 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is configured to relieve tension between the inner surface of the bore and the outside surface of the received pick shank.

7 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is configured proximate the rearward end of the bore.

8 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is configured to face away from a formation that is being degraded.

9 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is formed on the inner surface of the bore.

10 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess forms an interruption on the inner surface of the bore.

11 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the inner surface of the bore is continuous.

12 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is formed on the outer surface of the bore.

13 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess forms an interruption on the outer surface of the bore.

14 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the bore is continuous.

15 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess is formed through part of a thickness between the inner and outer surface of the bore.

16 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess comprises a first and second recess wall connected by a spring formed in a material of the block.

17 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one recess connects the outer surface of the bore to the inner surface.

18 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the block is hollow.

19 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bore connects a front end of the block to a back end.

20 . The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the driving mechanism is a rotary degradation drum, saw, chain, bucket, plow, excavator, or combination thereof.
