Abstract

A receiver receives from a remote system a voice biometric sample from a party attempting to obtain a service from the apparatus using the remote system. A processor selectively determines when to request authentication of the party by a remote voice biometric system. A transmitter transmit a request to the party to provide the voice biometric sample responsive to the processor determining to request authentication of the party. The apparatus provides the service contingent upon authentication of the party by the remote voice biometric system.

Claims (52)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive from a remote system a voice biometric sample from a party attempting to obtain a service from the apparatus using the remote system;

a processor configured to selectively determine when to request, over a network, authentication of the party by a remote voice biometric system; and

a transmitter configured to transmit a request to the party to provide the voice biometric sample responsive to the processor determining to request authentication of the party,

wherein the apparatus provides the service contingent upon authentication of the party by the remote voice biometric system.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the voice biometric sample is packetized according to an internet protocol.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the remote system includes a remote client communications device configured to provide access to the service to a plurality of authenticated parties.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the remote system includes a transaction apparatus configured for use by the party to request the service.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the apparatus comprises a telephony device.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the apparatus is within a communications network and intermediate to the remote system and the remote voice biometric system,

7. The apparatus of claim 6 ,

wherein the apparatus comprises an intelligent peripheral communications platform in the communications network.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 ,

wherein the apparatus comprises a voicemail communications platform in the communications network.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 ,

wherein the apparatus comprises a wireless network communications platform in the communications network.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 ,

wherein the remote system is configured to independently selectively determine whether to request the authentication by the remote voice biometric system.

11. A method for verifying an individual's identity, the method comprising:

receiving, by an apparatus, a voice biometric sample from a remote system from a party attempting to obtain a service from the apparatus using the remote system;

selectively determining, by the apparatus, when to request, over a network, authentication of the party by a remote voice biometric system; and

transmitting a request to the party to provide the voice biometric sample in response to the processor determining to request authentication of the party,

wherein the apparatus provides the service contingent upon authentication of the party by the remote voice biometric system.

12. The method for verifying an individual's identity of claim 11 ,

wherein the voice biometric sample is packetized according to a voice over internet protocol.

13. The method for verifying an individual's identity of claim 11 ,

wherein the remote voice biometric system includes a storage device from which voice biometric information is obtained to compare to the voice biometric sample, and

wherein the storage device comprises a speech characteristics database that stores pre-registered voice information in association with identification information that identifies the individual.

14. The method for verifying an individual's identity of claim 11 ,

wherein the remote voice biometric system performs a confidence check to determine a probability that the party is the individual, and

wherein the party is authenticated based on the determined probability.

15. The method for verifying an individual's identity of claim 11 ,

wherein authentication using the remote voice biometric system is provided as a subscription service.

16. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing a program for verifying an individual's identity, comprising:

a receiving code segment configured to receive a voice biometric sample from a remote system from a party attempting to obtain a service from an apparatus using the remote system;

a determining code segment configured to selectively determine when to request, over a network, authentication of the party by a remote voice biometric system; and

a transmitting code segment configured to transmit a request to the party to provide the voice biometric sample in response to the determining code segment determining to request authentication of the party,

wherein the apparatus provides the service contingent upon authentication of the party by the remote voice biometric system.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 ,

wherein voice biometric samples are received from a plurality of parties attempting to obtain a service from a plurality of remote systems.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 ,

wherein the apparatus comprises a network communications platform, and

wherein the remote voice biometric system authenticates parties for a plurality of network communications platforms.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 ,

wherein voice biometric information is received by the remote voice biometric system over the internet to compare to the voice biometric sample.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 ,

wherein the remote system includes a transaction platform used by the public to conduct a financial transaction.
