Abstract

A network node module includes a processing module and memory. The processing module is operable to generate a header section of a frame for transmission within a unified vehicle communication network. The header section includes a preamble, routing information, and a vehicle network field, which includes information that identifies a type of the frame. The processing module is further operable to generate a payload section of the frame. The payload section includes data payload and an integrity check field. The processing module is further operable to transmit the frame to the unified vehicle communication network in accordance with a global vehicle network communication protocol.

Claims (51)

1. A vehicle communication method comprises:

generating a header section of a frame for transmission within a unified vehicle communication network, wherein the header section includes a preamble, a vehicle network field, and routing information, and wherein the vehicle network field includes information that identifies content types of the frame to include: mission-critical, non-mission critical, vehicle operation and commercial content;

generating a payload section of the frame, wherein the payload section includes data payload and an integrity check field; and

transmitting the frame to the unified vehicle communication network in accordance with a global vehicle network communication protocol, wherein one or more of the transmissions includes communications outside of the vehicle.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprises:

a source address field including a source internet protocol (IP) address or a source physical device address; and

a destination address field including a destination IP address or a destination physical device address.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle network field further comprises

the content type of the frame including network data type and

priority level of the frame.

4. A network node module comprises:

a processing module;

memory coupled to the processing module, wherein the processing module is configured to:

generate a header section of a frame for transmission within a unified vehicle communication network, wherein the header section includes a preamble, a vehicle network field, and routing information, and wherein the vehicle network field includes information that identifies content types of the frame to include: mission-critical, non-mission critical, vehicle operation and commercial content;

generate a payload section of the frame, wherein the payload section includes data payload and an integrity check field; and

transmit the frame to the unified vehicle communication network in accordance with a global vehicle network communication protocol; and

a gateway coupled to the processing module, the gateway including at least one transceiver for communicating outside of a vehicle, the at least one transceiver configured to communicate using the global vehicle network communication protocol.

5. The network node module of claim 4 further comprises:

a source address field including a source internet protocol (IP) address or a source physical device address; and

a destination address field including a destination IP address or a destination physical device address.

6. The network node module of claim 4 , wherein the vehicle network field further comprises:

the content type of the frame including a network data type and

priority level of the frame.

7. The network node module of claim 4 further comprises:

the memory storing one or more of databases regarding priority level of the frame, type of the frame, coding of the frame.

8. The network node module of claim 4 , wherein the processing module is further operable to:

generate the vehicle network field by retrieving frame information from the memory.

9. The network node module of claim 4 , wherein the processing module is further operable to:

generate the vehicle network field to include null information such that another module of the unified vehicle communication network will populate the vehicle network field.

10. The network node module of claim 4 , wherein the commercial content comprises one or more of: images, video, graphics, audio and games.

11. The network node module of claim 4 , wherein the vehicle receives the commercial content based on any of: vehicle location, a driver's interests and recent communications to/from the vehicle.

12. A network node module comprises:

a processing module;

memory coupled to the processing module, wherein the processing module is configured to:

generate a header section of a frame for transmission within a unified vehicle communication network, wherein the header section includes a preamble, a vehicle network field, and routing information, and wherein the vehicle network field includes information that identifies content types of the frame to include: vehicle operation, occupant information, location and commercial content and null information such that another module of the unified vehicle communication network will populate the vehicle network field;

generate a payload section of the frame, wherein the payload section includes data payload and an integrity check field;

generate the vehicle network field by retrieving frame information from the memory; and

transmit the frame to the unified vehicle communication network in accordance with a global vehicle network communication protocol.

13. The network node module of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle network field further comprises one or more of:

the content type of the frame including one of: a mission-critical data type, a network data type and

priority level of the frame.

14. The network node module of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle network field further comprises:

one or more levels of sub-type information.

15. The network node module of claim 12 further comprises:

the memory storing one or more of databases regarding priority level of the frame, type of the frame, coding of the frame.

16. The network node module of claim 12 further comprises:

a gateway coupled to the processing module, the gateway including one or more wireless transceivers supporting communication with at least one of a highway network and a home network.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the commercial content comprises one or more of: images, video, graphics, audio and games.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle receives the commercial content based on any of: vehicle location, a driver's interests and recent communications to/from the vehicle.

19. The network node module of claim 12 , wherein the commercial content comprises one or more of: images, video, graphics, audio and games.

20. The network node module of claim 12 , wherein the vehicle receives the commercial content based on any of: vehicle location, a driver's interests and recent communications to/from the vehicle.
