Abstract

Surface texturing is employed to modify the topography of one or more surfaces (radial or cylindrical) of the sealing system for a roller cone rock bit. The surface texturing results in a dimpled surface which retains additional lubricant helpful in reducing friction in the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes. Shot peening is disclosed as one method for texturing the desired surface.

Claims (27)

1. A method of surface texturing a sealing surface of a rock bit having a shaft and a roller cone rotatably mounted thereto, the roller cone having an annular gland corresponding to the sealing surface of the shaft, the method, comprising:

applying a first shot peening action where the sealing surface is bombarded at a first intensity level by first small spherical shot media of a first average size; and

applying a subsequent second shot peening action where the sealing surface is bombarded at a second intensity level by second small spherical shot media of a second average size.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the second intensity level is reduced from the first intensity level.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the second average size is smaller than the first average size.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second intensity level is reduced from the first intensity level and wherein the second average size is smaller than the first average size.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising exposing the sealing surface to one or more additional shot peening actions.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first shot peening action surface textures between 60-100% of the sealing surface.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the second shot peening action surface textures between 60-100% of the sealing surface.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the first and second shot peening actions surface textures 100% of the sealing surface.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein, following completion of the second shot peening action, 60-100% of the sealing surface has been textured with randomly sized and distributed dimples.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said sealing surface is one of either a cylindrical or conical sealing surface on a shaft of a journal bearing system.

11. The method of claim 1 further including surface texturing a bearing surface associated with said sealing surface.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein surface texturing the bearing surface comprises exposing the bearing surface to a shot peening process to produce a surface texturing on said bearing surface.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said shot peening process on the bearing surface comprises:

applying a first shot peening action where the bearing surface is bombarded at a first intensity level by first small spherical shot media of a first average size; and

applying a subsequent second shot peening action where the bearing surface is bombarded at a second intensity level by second small spherical shot media of a second average size.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the rock bit includes a bearing bushing and the bearing surface that is surface textured is one of an inside or outside cylindrical surface of the bearing bushing.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the rock bit includes a bearing shaft and the bearing surface that is surface textured is an outer cylindrical surface of the bearing shaft.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein said surface texturing of the sealing surface is lighter than said surface texturing of the bearing surface.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein either said first or said subsequent second shot peening action comprises bombarding said sealing surface at an intensity level of about 0.007C to 0.012C by small spherical shot media having an average size of about 0.006 inches to 0.011 inches.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising choosing said intensity level and average size of the shot media for the shot peening process based on a hardness of a material which defines the sealing surface.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein choosing comprises selecting, if the hardness of the material is less than HRC 45, an intensity level of about 0.008C to 0.012C and an average size of about 0.006 inches.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein the shot media comprises glass bead.

21. The method of claim 18 wherein choosing comprises selecting, if the hardness of the material is greater than HRC 45, an intensity level of about 0.007C to 0.010C and an average size of about 0.011 inches.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the shot media comprises cast steel.

23. The method of claim 1 wherein the surface texturing on said sealing surface exhibits a surface finish roughness greater than about 20 microinches Ra.
