Abstract

One embodiment of the present invention is a unique method for operating an engine. Another embodiment is a unique engine system. Other embodiments include apparatuses, systems, devices, hardware, methods, and combinations for engines and engine systems. Further embodiments, forms, features, aspects, benefits, and advantages of the present application will become apparent from the description and figures provided herewith.

Claims (25)

1. A method for operating an engine, comprising:

providing a fuel such that a combustion chamber of the engine is supplied with the fuel;

starting the engine using the fuel;

producing an oxidant having an oxygen content greater than that of ambient air in an oxidant system and without using stored oxygen;

merging a stream of the oxidant with a stream of the fuel so as to form a feed stream at a location upstream of the reformer;

starting the reformer, such that the reformer receives the feed stream and reforms at least some of the fuel using the oxidant to produce a reformed fuel;

transitioning from the supplying of fuel to the combustion chamber to a supplying of the reformed fuel to the combustion chamber; and

providing only the reformed fuel to the combustion chamber after the transitioning.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the combustion chamber is a pre-combustion chamber.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transitioning is performed after the reformer has reached a catalytic auto-ignition temperature.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the engine is an internal combustion engine.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fuel is natural gas.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reformer is a catalytic partial oxidation (CPOX) reformer.

7. A method of operating an engine, comprising:

producing an oxidant having an oxygen content greater than that of ambient air in an oxidant system and without using stored oxygen;

operating a reformer to reform a fuel using the oxidant;

supplying the reformed fuel to each of a combustion chamber of the engine and a venting location, during engine operation and at a first ratio of an amount of the reformed fuel supplied to the combustion chamber to an amount of the reformed fuel supplied to the venting location;

changing an engine operating condition; and

supplying the reformed fuel to each of the combustion chamber and the venting location at a second ratio of an amount of the reformed fuel supplied to the combustion chamber to an amount of the reformed fuel supplied to the venting location, in response to the change in the engine operating condition.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the combustion chamber is a pre-combustion chamber.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the engine is an internal combustion engine.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the fuel is natural gas.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein no reformed fuel is supplied to the venting location at or above a selected engine operating point.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selected engine operating point is a maximum power operating point.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the reformer is a catalytic partial oxidation (CPOX) reformer.
