Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods treat cosmetic defects, and often apply cooling with at least one tissue-penetrating probe inserted through of the skin of a patient. The cooling may remodel one or more target tissue so as to effect a desired change in a composition of the target tissue and/or a change in its behavior. Exemplary embodiments of the cooling treatments will interfere with the nerve/muscle contractile function chain so as to mitigate wrinkles of the skin. Related treatments may be used therapeutically for treatment of back and other muscle spasms, chronic pain, and the like. Some embodiments may remodel subcutaneous adipose tissue so as to alter a shape or appearance of the skin surface.

Claims (28)

1. A method for cryogenically treating tissue, said method comprising:

providing a cryogenic device having a needle probe adapted to penetrate the tissue and with a distal portion and a proximal portion;

advancing the distal portion of the needle probe through skin into a target region of the tissue encompassing nerve tissue, wherein collateral tissue is disposed between treatment tissue and the skin, and wherein the distal portion of the needle probe is inserted such that the proximal portion of the needle probe extends beneath the skin and within the collateral tissue; and

cooling the target region with the distal portion of the needle probe, wherein cooling creates a treatment zone at the target region emanating from the distal portion of the needle probe, the nerve tissue being within the treatment zone,

wherein energy is applied to the needle probe at a planar surface from which the needle probe extends during cooling of the target region to proximally limit emanation of the treatment zone at the target region and protect the the collateral tissue, the planar surface contacting the skin,

wherein the nerve tissue is cooled enough to achieve a therapeutic or cosmetic result,

wherein the needle probe comprises an array of the needle probes extending from the planar surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy comprises heat transferred to the proximal portion of the needle probe.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein cooling comprises causing a cooling fluid to boil within the distal portion of the needle probe.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the energy contributes to vaporization of the cooling fluid within the proximal portion of the needle probe.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the needle probe is cooled to a temperature below 40° C. to create the treatment zone.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nerve tissue is inhibited from signal transmission after cooling.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nerve tissue includes a neuromuscular junction.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic or cosmetic result comprises inhibiting contraction of a muscle associated with the nerve tissue.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy inhibits discoloration of the skin.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the therapeutic or cosmetic result is temporary.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy is applied to the proximal portion of the needle probe prior to cooling the distal portion of the needle probe.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the energy causes the proximal portion of the needle probe to have a temperature greater than a temperature of the skin before cooling.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein cooling the distal portion of the needle probe comprises flowing cooling fluid in pulses.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the pulses decrease in duration after the cooling fluid is first flowed.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the energy is varyingly applied to the proximal portion of the needle probe.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the energy is varied in response to a varying temperature of a portion of the needle probe.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein cooling the distal portion of the needle probe comprises actuating a valve to cause the needle probe to be in fluid communication with a cartridge pressurized with cooling fluid.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the valve is actuated during cooling to vary pressure of the cooling fluid within the needle probe.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein each needle probe of the array of needle probes comprises a needle having a metal shaft, and wherein the proximal portion comprises a proximal end portion of the metal shaft.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the collateral tissue is positioned directly adjacent to the skin, and wherein the target region is directly adjacent to the collateral tissue.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the array of the needle probes perpendicularly extend from the planar surface.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the needle probes of the array of needle probes are straight and parallel to one another.
