Abstract

A flexible timebase for eye diagrams uses a stable free running oscillator as a sample clock for equivalent time sampling of an input serial digital signal and of a reference signal, derived from a subdivided recovered clock of the input serial digital signal. The reference signal samples are provided to a digital phase-locked loop that provides the flexible timebase to an eye pattern generator. The eye pattern generator accumulates the input serial digital signal samples at times corresponding to the reference signal samples to produce the eye diagram. A linear phase detector in the digital phase locked loop converts the reference signal samples to a complex signal using a Hilbert transform and then to a linear ramp of phase values using a CORDIC algorithm with arctangent lookup table. A subtractor then subtracts the digital phase-locked loop feedback from the linear ramp to provide the input to the loop filter.

Claims (38)

1. A flexible timebase for eye diagrams comprising:

means for recovering a clock signal from an input digital data signal;

means for processing the clock signal to produce a reference signal;

means for asynchronously sampling the input digital data signal and the reference signal using a free running oscillator; and

means for generating an eye pattern from the asynchronously sampled input digital data signal and reference signal;

wherein the generating means comprises:

means for obtaining time values from the asynchronously sampled reference signal; and

means for accumulating the sampled input digital data signal to generate the eye pattern;

and wherein the obtaining means comprises a digital phase-locked loop of the type having a phase detector for receiving the sampled reference signal at one input and providing an error signal at an output, having a loop filter for generating from the error signal a control signal for a numerical controlled oscillator, and having a loop feedback as another input to the phase detector.

2. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 1 wherein the phase detector comprises:

means for converting the sampled reference signal into a complex signal;

means for converting the complex signal into a linear ramp of phase values; and

means for subtracting the control signal from the linear ramp to produce the error signal.

3. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 2 wherein the phase detector further comprises means for counting each cycle of the linear ramp to provide bits for concatenation with the linear ramp to increase the dynamic range at the input of the subtracting means.

4. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 2 wherein the sampled reference signal converting means comprises a Hilbert transform to produce the complex signal.

5. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 2 wherein the complex signal converting means comprises an arctangent lookup table to produce the linear ramp.

6. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 5 wherein the complex signal converting means further comprises a trigonometric algorithm in conjunction with the arctangent lookup table to produce the linear ramp.

7. The flexible timebase as recited in claim 6 wherein the trigonometric function comprises a coordinate rotation digital computer algorithm.

8. The flexible timebase as recited in any of claims 1 - 7 wherein the reference signal comprises a sine wave.

9. A method of generating a flexible timebase for eye diagrams comprising the steps of:

recovering a clock signal from an input digital data signal;

dividing the clock signal to produce a reference signal;

asynchronously sampling the input digital data signal and the reference signal using a free running oscillator; and

generating an eye pattern for display from the asynchronously sampled input digital data signal and reference signal;

wherein the generating step comprises the steps of:

obtaining time values from the asynchronously sampled reference signal; and

accumulating the sampled input digital data signal to generate the eye pattern;

and wherein the obtaining step comprises the steps of:

receiving the sampled reference signal at one input of a phase detector for a digital phase-locked loop;

providing an error signal at an output of the phase detector;

generating from the error signal a control signal for a numerical controlled oscillator that provides the flexible timebase; and

providing a loop feedback as another input to the phase detector.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 wherein the obtaining step further comprises the steps of:

converting the sampled reference signal into a complex signal;

converting the complex signal into a linear ramp of phase values; and

subtracting the loop feedback from the linear ramp to produce the error signal at the output of the phase detector.

11. The method as recited in claim 10 wherein the obtaining step further comprises the step of counting each cycle of the linear ramp to provide bits for concatenation with the linear ramp to increase the dynamic range at the input of the subtracting step.

12. The method as recited in any of claims 9 - 11 wherein the reference signal comprises a sine wave.
