Abstract

A rotary blood pump includes a casing defining a pumping chamber. The pumping chamber has a blood inlet and a tangential blood outlet. One or more motor stators are provided outside of the pumping chamber. A rotatable impeller is within the pumping chamber and is adapted to cause blood entering the pumping chamber to move to the blood outlet. The impeller has one or more magnetic regions. The impeller is radially constrained in rotation by magnetic coupling to one or more motor stators and is axially constrained in rotation by one or more hydrodynamic thrust bearing surfaces on the impeller.

Claims (25)

1. A rotary blood pump comprising:

a housing defining a cylindrical pumping chamber having a blood inlet and a tangential blood outlet;

a rotatable impeller within said pumping chamber, said impeller having a rotational axis and a plurality of raised sectors surrounding said rotational axis, each of said raised sectors having an upper surface area defining a tapered region curved in the direction of rotation of said impeller and having a leading portion and a trailing portion such that a gap between each of said tapered regions and an interior surface of said housing decreases from said leading portion to said trailing portion to create a hydrodynamic thrust bearing with said interior surface of said housing when said impeller is rotating;

a fluid flow path between each pair of adjacent sectors, each of said fluid flow paths having parallel sidewalls perpendicular to the sidewalls of adjacent flow paths and extending along an inclined bottom surface descending across the axial height of said impeller to a radially peripheral exit at the base of said impeller; and

inner and outer boundaries of each of said tapered regions being defined by inner and outer coextensive shrouds, an interior side of each of said inner shrouds defining an inwardly facing and concavely shaped surface area coextensive with said inner shroud and descending toward said rotational axis of said impeller.

2. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 in which said housing is formed from a ceramic material.

3. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 in which said upper surface area of said housing comprises a ceramic disk.

4. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 in which said lower surface area of said housing comprises a ceramic disk.

5. The blood pump of claim 1 comprising an electrical connector adapted for electrical contact with proximate ends of a plurality of external power cables.

6. The blood pump of claim 5 in which the distal ends of said external power cables are electrically connected to a power source for driving said blood pump.

7. The blood pump of claim 6 comprising a pliable elongated cylinder in which said power cables are embedded.

8. The blood pump of claim 7 in which said pliable cylinder is formed from silicone.

9. The blood pump of claim 8 in which said pliable cylinder comprises a plurality of longitudinal lumens, each of said lumens containing one of said power cables.

10. The blood pump of claim 9 in which said pliable cylinder comprises six of said lumens.

11. A rotary blood pump comprising:

a housing defining a pumping chamber with upper and lower interior surfaces and having a blood inlet and a blood outlet;

a rotatable impeller within said pumping chamber, said impeller adapted to increase blood pressure within said pumping chamber when rotating to cause blood to move to said blood outlet, said impeller having a hollow interior space containing spaced apart sets of interior wall surface areas each of said sets consisting of a plurality of said wall surface areas each substantially perpendicular to the other, at least one of said interior wall surface areas having at least one bore closed at one end, the longitudinal axis of said at least one bore extending in one direction relative to the direction of rotation of said impeller.

12. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which said one direction is substantially parallel to the rotational axis of said impeller.

13. The rotary blood pump of claim 12 in which each of said sets of interior wall surface areas comprises one of said bores.

14. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which each of said sets of interior wall surface areas comprises a plurality of side-by-side bores extending in said one direction.

15. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which said one direction is substantially perpendicular to the rotational axis of said impeller.

16. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which said one direction is substantially parallel to the direction of rotation of said impeller.

17. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which at least one of said interior wall surface areas of each of said sets of wall surface areas has at least one bore closed at one end, the longitudinal axis of said at least one bore extending in said one direction.

18. The rotary blood pump of claim 17 in which each of said interior wall surface areas of each of said sets of wall surface areas has at least one bore closed at one end, the longitudinal axis of said at least one bore extending in said one direction.

19. The rotary blood pump of claim 11 in which each of said spaced apart sets of interior wall surface areas is oriented diagonally across the impeller from another of said sets of interior wall surface areas.
