Abstract

Disclosed herein are embodiments of foam backing panels for use with lap siding and configured for mounting on a building. Also disclosed are lap siding assemblies and products of lap sidings. One such embodiment of the foam backing panel comprises a rear face configured to contact the building, a front face configured for attachment to the lap siding, alignment means for aligning the lap siding relative to the building, means for providing a shadow line, opposing vertical side edges, a top face extending between a top edge of the front face and rear face and a bottom face extending between a bottom edge of the front face and rear face.

Claims (24)

1. A composite panel comprising:

a foam backer having a front side, a back side, a top face with a front edge and a back edge, and a bottom edge meeting a lower edge of the front side; and

a siding panel having a front face, a rear face, a top edge, and a bottom edge, the bottom edge of the siding panel extending beyond the bottom edge of the foam backer;

wherein the top face is angled from the front edge to the back edge such that the top face is not visible from the front of the foam backer, and the front edge of the top face is aligned with the top edge of the siding panel;

wherein the bottom edge of the foam backer consists of a rear angled portion complementary to the shape of the top face of the foam backer and a front level portion complementary to the shape of the top edge of the siding panel;

wherein the rear face of the siding panel is attached to the front side of the foam backer;

wherein the rear face of the siding panel is planar and has no lip, and the siding panel has a constant thickness from the top edge to the bottom edge.

2. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the foam backer further comprises a drainage system in the back side.

3. The composite panel of claim 2 , wherein the drainage system comprises intersecting channels in the back side of the foam backer.

4. The composite panel of claim 1 , having an R-value of from 3.5 to 4.0.

5. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the composite panel has a thickness of from 1 inch to 1.25 inches.

6. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the siding panel has a thickness of less than 0.13 inches.

7. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the foam backer is made from expanded polystyrene.

8. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the siding panel is made of fiber cement.

9. The composite panel of claim 1 , wherein the foam backer comprises a chemical additive to deter termites and carpenter ants.

10. A composite panel comprising:

a foam backer having a front side, a rear side, a top face with a front edge and a back edge, and a bottom edge meeting a lower edge of the front side; and

a siding panel having a front face, a rear face, a top edge, and a bottom edge;

wherein the front side of the foam backer is angled with respect to the back side of the foam backer;

wherein the top face is angled from the front edge to the back edge such that the top face is not visible from the front of the foam backer, and the front edge of the top face is aligned with the top edge of the siding panel;

wherein the rear face of the siding panel is attached to the front side of the foam backer, the rear face of the siding panel is planar and has no lip, the bottom edge of the siding panel extends beyond the bottom edge of the foam backer, forming an overlap region of the siding panel ending at the bottom edge, and the siding panel has a constant thickness from the top edge to the bottom edge; and

wherein the bottom edge of the foam backer consists of a rear angled portion complementary to the shape of the top face of the foam backer and a front level portion complementary to the shape of the top edge of the siding panel.

11. The composite panel of claim 10 , wherein the siding panel has a thickness of less than 0.13 inches and is made of fiber cement.

12. The composite panel of claim 10 , wherein when the composite panel is installed above an identical lower composite panel, the overlap region of the composite panel overlaps the lower composite panel such that no portion of the foam backer is between the composite panel and the lower composite panel in the overlap region and the lip of the composite panel contacts the lower panel.
