Abstract

Systems and methods for data classification to facilitate and improve data management within an enterprise are described. The disclosed systems and methods evaluate and define data management operations based on data characteristics rather than data location, among other things. Also provided are methods for generating a data structure of metadata that describes system data and storage operations. This data structure may be consulted to determine changes in system data rather than scanning the data files themselves.

Claims (38)

1. A system for identifying data based on entities associated with the data, comprising:

an entity definition component that defines one or more entities;

a data identification component that locates data and determines one or more entities associated with the data;

a data classification component that determines at least one characteristic of the data related to patterns describing interactions with the one or more entities associated with the data; and

a metabase component that stores metadata and responds to requests to perform data storage operations based on the metadata.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the entity definition component comprises a Microsoft Active Directory.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the entity definition component defines one or more users of the system.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the entity definition component defines one or more groups of users of the system and the groups are based on job functions within an organization.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the entity definition component defines one or more groups of users of the system.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the data identification component determines an entity that created the data.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the data identification component determines one or more entities that accessed the data.

8. A method for identifying data based on entities associated with the data, comprising:

defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities;

locating data and determining one or more entities associated with the located data,

wherein the entities are associated with rights to access the located data;

determining at least one characteristic of the located data,

wherein the at least one characteristic is related to patterns describing interactions with the one or more entities associated with the data;

storing metadata associated with the located data and the one or more entities; and

responding to requests to perform data storage operations based on the stored metadata and the definitions of the one or more entities.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises accessing a Microsoft Active Directory.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more users of the system.

11. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more groups of users, wherein the groups are based on job functions within an organization.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more groups of users of the system.

13. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises determining an entity that created the located data.

14. The method of claim 8 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises determining one or more entities that accessed the located data.

15. One or more computer-readable media storing instructions for identifying data based on entities associated with the data, wherein the instructions, when executed by at least one computer, cause the computer to perform steps, comprising:

defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities;

locating data and determining one or more entities associated with the located data,

wherein the entities are associated with rights to access the located data;

determining at least one characteristic of the located data,

wherein the at least one characteristic is related to patterns describing interactions with the one or more entities associated with the data;

storing metadata associated with the located data and the one or more entities; and

responding to requests to perform data storage operations based on the stored metadata and the definitions of the one or more entities.

16. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more users of the system.

17. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more groups of users, wherein the groups are based on job functions within an organization.

18. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises defining one or more groups of users of the system.

19. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises determining an entity that created the located data.

20. The one or more computer-readable media of claim 15 wherein defining or receiving definitions of one or more entities comprises determining one or more entities that accessed the located data.
