Abstract

A clutch system for a transmission having a clutch assembly and a brake assembly. The clutch system includes a clutch assembly and a brake assembly coupled to a planetary gear set, engine and two electric motors to reduce transmission complexity, costs, and efficiency losses. The clutch assembly also includes a wear compensation mechanism and a clutch separator mechanism.

Claims (110)

1. A hybrid transmission comprising:

a clutch assembly;

a brake assembly;

an input planetary gear set;

a first input shaft coupled to said input planetary gear set; and

a second input shaft coupled to said brake assembly, said clutch assembly, and said input planetary gear set;

a transmission input shaft coupled to said first input shaft;

a first electric motor;

a first electric motor planetary gear set including:

a first electric motor sun gear coupled said first electric motor,

a first electric motor carrier coupled to an input carrier of said input planetary gear set, and

a first electric motor ring gear,

a second electric motor;

a second electric motor gear set;

an output shaft;

a first output driver gear coupled to said second electric motor by said second electric motor gear set;

a second output driver gear coupled to said first electric motor ring gear; and

an output driven gear coupled to said first output driver gear and said second output driver gear: and

an output planetary gear set including:

a sun gear coupled to said output driven gear,

an output ring gear non-rotatably coupled to a transmission housing, and

an output carrier coupled to said output shaft,

wherein said clutch assembly selectively couples said second input shaft to said transmission input shaft and said brake assembly selectively prevents rotation of said second input shaft.

2. The hybrid transmission of claim l, wherein:

said first input shaft is coupled to an input ring gear of said input planetary gear set; and

said second input shaft is coupled to an input sun gear of said input planetary gear set.

3. The hybrid transmission of claim 2 , further comprising:

an output shaft;

a first electric motor coupled to a carrier of said input planetary gear set and said output shaft; and

a second electric motor coupled to said output shaft.

4. The hybrid transmission of claim 1 , wherein said first output driver gear and said second output driver gear are coupled to said output driven gear by a chain or belt.

5. The hybrid transmission of claim 1 , wherein said first output driver gear and said second output driver gear are coupled to said output driven gear by being continuously meshed with said output driven gear.

6. The hybrid transmission of claim 1 , wherein the default state of said clutch assembly is activated and the default state of said brake assembly is deactivated.

7. The hybrid transmission of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first separator spring;

a first pair of snap rings;

a second separator spring; and a second pair of snap rings, wherein:

said clutch assembly further comprises:

a first clutch disk; and

a first friction plate,

said brake assembly further comprises:

a second clutch disk; and

a second friction plate,

a first snap ring of said first pair of snap rings is disposed between said first clutch disk and said first friction plate, and a second snap ring of said first pair of snap rings is disposed on the opposite side of said first friction plate,

said first separator spring is disposed between said first clutch disk and said first snap ring of said first pair of snap rings, said first separator spring applies a force to said first clutch disk to move said first clutch disk away from said first friction plate,

said second snap ring of said first pair of snap rings permits said first clutch disk to move a limited, predefined distance away from said first friction plate,

a first snap ring of said second pair of snap rings is disposed between said second clutch disk and said second friction plate, and a second snap ring of said second pair of snap rings is disposed on the opposite side of said second friction plate, said second separator spring is disposed between said second clutch disk and said first snap ring of said second pair of snap rings,

said second separator spring applies a force to said second clutch disk to move said second clutch disk away from said second friction plate, and

said second snap ring of said second pair of snap rings permits said second clutch disk to move a limited, predefined distance away from said second friction plate.

8. The hybrid transmission of claim 7 , wherein said first friction plate and said second friction plate are the same friction plate.

9. The hybrid transmission of claim 1 , wherein said clutch assembly further comprises:

a separator spring;

a pressed ring;

a spline shaft;

a clutch disk mounted upon said spline shaft; and

a friction plate, wherein:

said second input shaft has a radial groove perpendicular to its longitudinal axis,

said spline shaft is non-rotatably disposed around said second input shaft,

said pressed ring is disposed along an inner circumference of said spline shaft and in said groove of said second input shaft,

said separator spring is disposed between said clutch disk and said friction plate and applies a force to said clutch disk to move said clutch disk away from said friction plate, and

said pressed ring is movable with respect to said spline shaft in a first direction but not in a second direction.

The hybrid transmission of claim 9 , wherein the application force of said clutch assembly causes said pressed ring to move with respect to said spline shaft in a first direction and the force of said separator spring is insufficient to move said pressed ring with respect o said spline shaft in any direction.

11. A transmission comprising:

a transmission input shaft;

a brake assembly;

a clutch assembly;

an input planetary gear set;

a first input shaft coupled to said input planetary gear set and said transmission input shaft;

a second input shaft coupled to said brake assembly, said clutch assembly, and said input planetary gear set;

a first electric motor;

a first electric motor gear set coupled to said first electric motor;

a second electric motor;

a second electric motor gear set coupled to said second electric motor;

an output gear set; and

an output shaft coupled to said output gear set, wherein:

said clutch assembly selectively couples said second input shaft to said transmission input shaft,

said brake assembly selectively couples said second input shaft to a transmission housing,

said second electric motor gear set is coupled to said input planetary gear set, and

said first electric motor gear set and said second electric motor gear set are coupled to said output gear set.

12. The transmission of claim 11 wherein said first input shaft is coupled to a ring gear of said input planetary gear set, and said second input shaft is coupled to a sun gear of said input planetary gear set.

13. The transmission of claim 11 , further comprising:

a first separator spring;

a first pair of snap rings;

a second separator spring; and

a second pair of snap rings, wherein:

said clutch assembly further comprises:

a first clutch disk; and

a first friction plate,

said brake assembly further comprises:

a second clutch disk; and

a second friction plate, a first snap ring of said first pair of snap rings is disposed between said first clutch disk and said first friction plate, and a second snap ring of said first pair of snap rings is disposed on the opposite side of said first friction plate,

said first separator spring is disposed between said first clutch disk and said first snap ring of said first pair of snap rings,

said first separator spring applies a force to said first clutch disk to move said first clutch disk away from said first friction plate,

said second snap ring of said first pair of snap rings permits said first clutch disk to move a limited, predefined distance away from said first friction plate,

a first snap ring of said second pair of snap rings is disposed between said second clutch disk and said second friction plate, and a second snap ring of said second pair of snap rings is disposed on the opposite side of said second friction plate,

said second separator spring is disposed between said second clutch disk and said first snap ring of said second pair of snap rings,

said second separator spring applies a force to said second clutch disk to move said second clutch disk away from said second friction plate, and

said second snap ring of said second pair of snap rings permits said second clutch disk to move a limited, predefined distance away from said second friction plate.

14. The transmission of claim 11 , wherein said clutch assembly further comprises:

a separator spring;

a pressed ring;

a spline shaft;

a clutch disk mounted upon said spline shaft; and

a friction plate wherein:

said second input shaft has a radial groove perpendicular to its longitudinal axis,

said spline shaft is non-rotatably disposed around said second input shaft,

said pressed ring is disposed along an inner circumference of said spline shaft and in said groove of said second input shaft,

said separator spring is disposed between said clutch disk and said friction plate and applies a force to said clutch disk to move said clutch disk away from said friction plate, and

said pressed ring is movable with respect to said spline shaft in a first direction but not in a second direction.

15. The transmission of claim 14 , wherein the application force of said clutch assembly causes said pressed ring to move with respect to said spline shaft in a first direction and the force applied by said separator spring is insufficient to move said pressed ring with respect to said spline shaft in any direction.
