Abstract

A rotary inkjet imaging apparatus includes a curved print zone having a longitudinal axis and in which a page of media is held in a curved configuration at a stationary position, a carrier movable bi-directionally along a linear path defined adjacent to the curved print zone and extending parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof, and at least one inkjet printhead supported by the carrier for undergoing movement within the curved print zone along a curved path winding about a central axis extending parallel to the guide path and coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the curved print zone such that the inkjet printhead moves about the central axis multiple revolutions and prints on the page concurrently as the carrier unidirectionally moves along the linear path and the printhead moves within the curved print zone and through portions of the curved path in which the printhead faces toward the page.

Claims (12)

1. A rotary inkjet imaging apparatus for imaging a page of media having a length and width dimension held stationary during imaging in a curved configuration defining a curved print zone having a longitudinal axis, comprising:

a carrier assembly including a carrier;

a plurality of inkjet printheads rotatably supported by said carrier for undergoing multiple winding movements at a rotation speed within said curved print zone about a central axis extending parallel to said longitudinal axis so that each printhead moves in a generally helical path of movement about the central axis and each inkjet printhead images an entirety of the page of media while moving across the length and width dimensions of the stationarily held page of media in a single pass of the carrier that moves at an advance speed through the curved print zone, each of the plurality of inkjet printheads having pluralities of nozzles for ejecting ink and a respective ink cartridge; and

control circuitry to coordinate the rotation speed and the advance speed to adjust a printing time per page according to predetermined image quality requirements for said imaging.

2. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry receives as input on a signal line a print grid line dot pitch (D).

3. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry receives as input on a signal line a maximum jetting frequency (f) for ejecting ink from the pluralities of nozzles.

4. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry receives as input on a signal line a total number of the pluralities of nozzles that are available to print on a given print grid line (T).

5. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry receives as input on a signal line a predetermined number of nozzles of the plurality of nozzles that are made available to print a given dot of ink on a given print grid line.

6. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to supply a scan speed as an output.

7. The imaging apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the control circuitry receives as the input on the signal line the predetermined number of nozzles of the plurality of nozzles of each inkjet printhead in a range of 1 to 4.

8. The imaging apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry receives as an input a total number of the pluralities of nozzles of each inkjet printhead that are available to print on the given print grid line in a range higher than the predetermined number of nozzles.

9. The imaging apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the control circuitry receives as the input on the signal line the total number of the pluralities of nozzles that are available to print on the given print grid line is at least as great as eight nozzles.
