Abstract

An apparatus for imaging a tooth has at least one illumination source for providing an incident light having a first spectral range for obtaining a reflectance image of the tooth and a second spectral range for exciting a fluorescence image of the tooth. A first polarizer having a first polarization axis and a compensator in the path of the incident light of the first spectral range are disposed to direct light toward the tooth. A second polarizer is disposed to direct light obtained from the tooth toward a sensor and has a second polarization axis that is orthogonal to the first polarization axis. A lens is positioned in the return path to direct image-bearing light from the tooth toward the sensor for obtaining image data. A filter in the path of the image-bearing light from the tooth is treated to attenuate light in the second spectral range.

a filter in the path of the image-bearing light from the tooth and treated to attenuate light in the second spectral range.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compensator is a C-plate compensator.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compensator is positioned along the light path between the at least one light source and the first polarizer.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compensator is positioned along the light path between the first polarizer and the second polarizer.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compensator is a composite formed using an A-plate and a C-plate compensator.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the compensator is a composite formed using two A-plate compensators.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the illumination source comprises a first light source having the first spectral range and a second light source having the second spectral range.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the illumination source further comprises a third light source and a fourth light source, wherein both the third and fourth light sources direct a beam toward a point that corresponds with the focus of the lens.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising control logic that automatically detects overlap of light from the third and fourth light sources as focus and initiates capture of image data at the sensor.

10. The apparatus of claim 7 further comprising a band pass filter in the path of the second light source.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the lens is telecentric in object space.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the sensor is taken from the group consisting of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor and a charged couple device (CCD) sensor.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the illumination source is taken from the group consisting of an LED, an incandescent bulb, a super luminescent diode, a diode-pumped solid-state crystal source, and a diode-pumped rare earth-doped fiber source.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first spectral range is between about 400 nm and 700 nm.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a display coupled to the sensor for presenting the image data obtained therefrom.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second spectral range is between about 300 nm and 500 nm.
