Abstract

A document management system monitors proposed recipients for documents and provides recommendations on alterations to the distribution set, such as by adding or removing recipients.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

providing an electronic document;

receiving an initial set of designated recipients for the electronic document from a user;

evaluating content of the electronic document;

comparing an electronic message designation associated with the user with an electronic message designation associated with a second user;

determining, using a computing system, if the initial set of designated recipients for the electronic document should be modified based on the comparison; and

forming a final set of designated recipients.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the electronic document is compared to prior documents generated by the user or a set of other users related to said the user to identify distribution recipients of the prior documents.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein prior document distribution designations of the prior documents are correlated to identify relationships between recipients and to predict an additional set of recipients to be added to the initial set of designated recipients to form the final set.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein prior document distribution designations of the prior documents are correlated to identify relationships between recipients and to predict an additional set of recipients to be removed from said set of designated recipients to form the final set.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising analyzing a plurality of documents authored by the user or other users to classify content therein and form a set of individual content topics; and processing the electronic document to determine a first topic associated with the electronic document; wherein said electronic document is compared only to prior documents which are related to the first topic.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a suggestion to the user for a proposed recipient group based on correlating characteristics of recipients and documents associated with the user.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the final set includes a first set of additional recipients determined to be correlated above a first specified threshold value with the initial set of designated recipients.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising predicting a second set of additional recipients determined to be correlated above a second specified threshold value with the first set of additional recipients.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein a sequence used by the user for entering said the initial set of designated recipients is monitored to determine a correlation to prior sequences used by the user.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the electronic document is a selected one of an email and an instant message (IM), and the initial set of designated recipients is obtained from an email/IM address book.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the final set of designated recipients is derived from any of the group consisting of the email/IM address book and an address book from a third party account.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing an alert to the user when an inappropriate recipient is detected.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein evaluating content of the electronic document is only performed when the initial set of designated recipients includes a plurality of recipients.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein content of the electronic document is analyzed while the user is generating the electronic document.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein prior document designations by the user are pre-computed prior to generating the electronic document to accelerate evaluation during evaluating content of the electronic document.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein at least part of evaluating content of the electronic document is performed while the document is being provided.

17. A method comprising:

identifying an electronic document;

receiving an initial set of designated recipients for the electronic document;

evaluating content of said the electronic document; comparing an electronic message designation associated with the user with an electronic message designation associated with a second user;

determining, using a computing system, if the initial set of designated recipients should be modified based on the comparison; and

forming a final set of designated recipients.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the document is also analyzed to identify a uniform resource locator (URL) to be added based on an existing URL in the document.

19. A method comprising:

receiving a plurality of designated recipients for an electronic document from a first user;

determining an electronic message designation associated with the first user;

determining an electronic message designation associated with a second user;

comparing the electronic message designation associated with the first user and the electronic message designation associated with the second user using a computing system; and

determining, using the computing system, an additional recipient for the electronic document from the first user based on the results of the comparison.
