Abstract

The invention provides methods and pharmaceutical compositions for treating symptoms associated with lactose intolerance and for overall improvement in gastrointestinal health. Described herein are methods and pharmaceutical compositions for improving overall gastrointestinal health or for decreasing symptoms of lactose intolerance by administering to subject in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition comprising a prebiotic, optionally in combination with effective amount of a probiotic microbe or microbes.

Claims (19)

1. A method of treating lactose intolerance in a subject who has experienced one or more symptoms of lactose intolerance comprising administering about 0.1 g to about 20 g of a pharmaceutical composition to said subject for a predetermined number of days; wherein at least about 80% of the total weight of said pharmaceutical composition is galactooligosaccharides (GOS); wherein said pharmaceutical composition does not comprise a probiotic; wherein said pharmaceutical composition is provided in a dosage form that is a capsule, tablet, softgel, powder, effervescent tablet, or lozenge; and wherein after administration of said pharmaceutical composition said subject has a persistent decrease in at least one of said one or more symptoms of lactose intolerance after consumption of lactose containing foods.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said dosage form comprises an enteric coating.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said subject is a human subject.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein said human subject is a pediatric subject, an adult subject, an elderly subject, or a post-menopausal woman.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined number of days is 14, 30, or 35 days.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method comprises administering a lower dosage of GOS on the first day of administration than the last day of administration.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method comprises administering the same dosage of GOS on the first day of administration as on the last day of administration.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said one or more symptoms of lactose intolerance comprise flatulence, heartburn, upset stomach, nausea, bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping, or vomiting.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said administering comprises from about 1.5 g to about 15 g of said pharmaceutical composition per day.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least 95% of the total weight of said pharmaceutical composition is GOS.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined number of days is 10 to 40 days.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said decrease persists for a week or more.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein said pharmaceutical composition is administered once a day.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein said pharmaceutical composition is administered twice a day.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least 80% of the total weight of said pharmaceutical composition is GOS.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least 85% of the total weight of said pharmaceutical composition is GOS.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least 90% of the total weight of said pharmaceutical composition is GOS.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein said GOS comprises degrees of polymerization of 6 or less.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein said administrating comprises about 0.1 g to about 20 g of said pharmaceutical composition provided twice a day.
