Abstract

An automated banking machine system and method includes automated banking machines that operate responsive to data bearing records and accept checks and dispense cash to users. The automated banking machines are operated to acquire image and magnetic data from deposited checks to determine the genuineness of checks and the authority of a user to receive cash for such checks. Cash is dispensed to the user from the machine in exchange for the deposited check.

Claims (82)

1. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine responsive at least in part to operation of a check imaging device of the machine, to generate image data corresponding to a visual image of a check input to the machine during a transaction,

wherein the machine includes

a cash dispenser,

at least one output device,

at least one user input device,

wherein the at least one user input device is operative to receive at least one user input corresponding to user data usable to identify a financial account;

(b) operating the machine to cause check data corresponding to visual indicia included on the check, to be determined responsive at least in part to the image data generated in (a);

(c) operating the machine responsive at least in part to input of the check, to cause the cash dispenser to dispense cash;

(d) operating the machine to receive transaction identifying data from at least one remote computer; and

(e) operating the machine to cause at least one image message to be sent to the at least one remote computer, wherein the at least one image message includes data corresponding to both at least a portion of the transaction identifying data received in (d) and the image data generated in (a).

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one user input device includes at least one user data reader, wherein the at least one remote computer includes a transaction host, and further comprising:

(f) operating the at least one user data reader to read user data usable to identify a financial account;

(g) prior to (d), operating the machine to send to the transaction host, at least one transaction message including the user data read in (f) and the check data determined in (b);

wherein (d) includes operating the machine to receive from the transaction host, at least one message including the transaction identifying data.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein the at least one output device includes a display screen, and further comprising:

(h) subsequent to (g), operating the machine to receive a transaction authorization message from the transaction host;

wherein (c) includes operating the machine to cause the cash dispenser to dispense cash responsive at least in part to the transaction authorization message received in (h).

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine is part of a banking system,

wherein the machine includes at least one reader and at least one machine computer,

wherein the at least one reader includes both

a card reader, and

a biometric reader,

wherein the at least one machine computer is operative during a user transaction session to

cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, and further comprising:

(f) operating the card reader to read user card data; and

(g) operating the biometric reader to read user biometric data; and

(h) operating the at least one machine computer to allow a machine user to request a financial transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to both

computer-determined correspondence between the user card data read in (f) and stored card information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the user biometric data read in (g) and stored biometric information.

5. A method involving an automated banking machine that is operable responsive at least in part to data read from data bearing records, comprising:

(a) operating the automated banking machine to receive through at least one input device of the machine, user data from a user of the machine during a transaction,

wherein the user data is usable to identify a financial account,

wherein the machine includes at least one reader device;

(b) operating the machine to receive at least one check from the user;

(c) operating the machine to read visible indicia on the check;

(d) operating the machine to determine check data corresponding to at least a portion of the visible indicia;

(e) operating the machine to cause at least one first message that includes data corresponding to the check data determined in (d) and the user data received in (a), to be sent to at least one first remote computer;

(f) operating the machine to receive from the at least one first remote computer, at least one second message that includes transaction identifying data;

(g) operating the machine to generate image data corresponding to visual appearance of at least a portion of the check; and

(h) subsequent to (f), operating the machine to send at least a portion of the image data generated in (g) and at least a portion of the transaction identifying data received in (f) to at least one second remote computer that differs from the at least one first remote computer.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the at least one first remote computer comprises a transaction host, wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser, and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (e), operating the machine to receive a transaction authorization message from the transaction host; and

(j) operating the machine to cause the cash dispenser to dispense an amount of cash associated with the check, responsive at least in part to the transaction authorization message received in (i).

7. The method according to claim 5 wherein (c) includes reading at least one character in a micr line on the check, and wherein (d) includes determining data corresponding to the at least character in the micr line.

8. The method according to claim 5 wherein (c) includes reading at least one amount on the check, and wherein (d) includes determining at least one numerical value corresponding to the at least one amount.

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein (d) includes determining a numerical value corresponding to a courtesy amount appearing on the check.

10. The method according to claim 8 wherein the machine includes at least one output device, wherein in (f) the at least one second message includes instruction data, and further comprising:

(i) operating the machine responsive to the instruction data, to indicate through the at least one output device that the user has been credited a value associated with the check.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser, and further comprising:

(j) operating the machine to receive a user request for a cash amount corresponding to the value; and

(k) operating the machine to cause the cash dispenser to dispense the cash amount corresponding to the value.

12. The method according to claim 5

wherein the at least one first message sent in (e) includes at least some data corresponding to a terminal identifier which identifies the machine,

wherein the at least one second message received in (f) includes at least some data corresponding to the terminal identifier.

13. The method according to claim 5 wherein in (f) the transaction identifying data includes data corresponding to a transaction number.

14. The method according to claim 5 wherein in (f) the transaction identifying data includes data corresponding to a business date.

15. The method according to claim 5 wherein in (f) the transaction identifying data includes a least one of

data corresponding to an entity responsible for operation of the machine, and

data identifying an entity offering check cashing services through the machine.

16. A method comprising:

(a) operating an automated banking machine to receive from a user through at least one user data reader of the machine during a transaction, user data usable to identify a financial account;

(b) operating the machine to receive at least one check from the user;

(c) operating the machine to read visible indicia on the check;

(d) operating the machine to determine check data corresponding to at least a portion of the visible indicia;

(e) operating the machine to cause at least one first message including data corresponding to the check data determined in (d) and the user data received in (a), to be sent to at least one first remote computer;

(f) subsequent to (e), operating the machine to receive from the at least one first remote computer, at least one second message responsive to the at least one first message, wherein the at least one second message includes transaction identifying data;

(g) operating the machine to generate image data corresponding to visual appearance of at least a portion of the check; and

(h) subsequent to (f), operating the machine to cause at least a portion of the image data generated in (g) and the transaction identifying data received in (f), to be sent in associated relation to at least one remote computer.

17. The method according to claim 16 wherein the at least one remote computer in (h) differs from the at least one first remote computer in (e).

18. The method according to claim 17 wherein the at least one first remote computer comprises a transaction host, wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser, and further comprising:

(i) subsequent to (e), operating the machine to receive a transaction authorization message from the transaction host; and

(j) operating the machine to cause the cash dispenser to dispense an amount of cash associated with the check, responsive at least in part to the transaction authorization message received in (i).

19. The method according to claim 16

wherein (c) includes reading at least one character in a micr line of the check,

wherein (d) includes determining character data that corresponds to the at least character read in (c),

wherein in (e) the at least one first message includes data that corresponds to the character data determined in (d).

20. The method according to claim 16

wherein (c) includes reading at least one amount on the check,

wherein (d) includes determining at least one numerical value that corresponds to the at least one amount read in (c),

wherein in (e) the at least one first message includes data that corresponds to the numerical value determined in (d).
