Abstract

A materials-separation process includes a sorting operation in which plastics materials including at least first and second plastics materials are sorted from paper and metal materials so that the first plastics material may be separated from the second plastics material.

Claims (45)

1. A separation process comprising the operations of

separating first plastics flakes having a first material density from second plastics flakes having a relatively lighter second material density and third plastics flakes having relatively lighter third material density using a higher-density fluid having a first fluid density that is between the first and the relatively lighter second material densities and

separating the second plastics flakes from the third plastics flakes using a lower-density fluid comprising vegetable oil and an additive configured to decrease surface tension and having a relatively lower second fluid density that is between the relatively lighter second material density and the relatively lighter third material density.

2. The separation process of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid density is about 1.0 g/cm 3 .

3. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the higher-density fluid is water.

4. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the higher-density fluid includes water and an additive configured to minimize surface tension of the water.

5. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the lower-density fluid has a second fluid density in a range of about 0.91 g/cm 3 to about 0.96 g/cm 3 .

6. The separation process of claim 5 , wherein the lower-density fluid has a second fluid density in a range of about 0.92 g/cm 3 to about 0.93 g/cm 3 .

7. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the lower-density fluid is soybean oil.

8. The separation process of claim 7 , wherein the soybean oil has a second fluid density in the range of about 0.924 g/cm 3 to about 0.928 g/cm 3 .

9. The separation process of claim 7 , wherein the lower-density fluid has a second fluid density in a range of about 0.92 g/cm 3 to about 0.93 g/cm 3 .

10. The separation process of claim 9 , wherein the first plastics material has a first material density in a range of about 1.3 g/cm 3 to about 1.4 g/cm 3 .

11. The separation process of claim 10 , wherein the second plastics material has a second material density in a range of about 0.94 g/cm 3 to about 0.97 g/cm 3 .

12. The separation process of claim 11 , wherein the third plastics material has a third material density in a range of about 0.89 g/cm 3 to about 0.92 g/cm 3 .

13. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the vegetable oil is selected from the group consisting of soybean oil, rape seed oil, sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, cotton seed oil, palm oil, and linseed oil.

14. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the first plastics material has a first material density in a range of about 1.05 g/cm 3 to about 1.4 g/cm 3 .

15. The separation process of claim 14 , wherein the first plastics material has a first material density in a range of about 1.05 g/cm 3 to about 1.1 g/cm 3 .

16. The separation process of claim 14 , wherein the first plastics material has a first material density in a range of about 1.32 g/cm 3 to about 1.38 g/cm 3 .

17. The separation process of claim 14 , wherein the first plastics material is polyethylene terephthalate.

18. The separation process of claim 14 , wherein the second plastics material has a second material density in a range of about 0.94 g/cm 3 to about 0.99 g/cm 3 .

19. The separation process of claim 18 , wherein the second plastics material has a second material density in a range of about 0.94 g/cm 3 to about 0.97 g/cm 3 .

20. The separation process of claim 19 , wherein the second plastics material is high density polyethylene.

21. The separation process of claim 18 , wherein the third plastics material has a third material density in a range of about 0.89 g/cm 3 to about 0.92 g/cm 3 .

22. The separation process of claim 21 , wherein the third plastics material is polypropylene.

23. The separation process of claim 2 , wherein the second fluid density is in a range of about 0.91 g/cm 3 to about 0.97 g/cm 3 .

24. The separation process of claim 23 , wherein the second fluid density is in a range of about 0.92 g/cm 3 to about 0.93 g/cm 3 .

25. The separation process of claim 24 , wherein the first material density is in a range of about 1.3 g/cm 3 to about 1.4 g/cm 3 .

26. The separation process of claim 25 , wherein the second material density is in a range of about 0.94 g/cm 3 to about 0.97 g/cm 3 .

27. The separation process of claim 26 , wherein the third material density is in a range of about 0.89 g/cm 3 to about 0.92 g/cm 3 .

28. The separation process of claim 1 , wherein the lower-density fluid includes a vegetable oil and an additive configured to decrease surface tension.

29. The separation process of claim 1 , wherein the lower-density fluid includes vegetable oil and an additive configured to maximize oxidative stability of the vegetable oil.

30. The separation process of claim 1 , further comprising a materials-collection stage including a collecting operation in which plastics materials including the first plastics material, the second plastics material, and the third plastics material are collected and a sorting operation in which the first, second, and third plastics materials are sorted from contaminants to establish a mixed-plastics stream.

31. The separation process of claim 30 , wherein the materials-collection stage further includes a baling operation in which the mixed-plastics stream is baled together to establish a bale of mixed-plastics materials.

32. The separation process of claim 31 , further comprising a materials-preparation stage including a breaking operation in which the bale of mixed-plastics materials is broken apart to establish the mixed-plastics stream.

The separation process of claim 32 , wherein the materials-preparation stage further includes a grinding operation in which the stream of mixed-plastics material is ground to establish first plastics material flakes associated with the first plastics material, second plastics material flakes associated with the second plastics material, and third plastics material flakes associated with the third plastics material and a cleaning operation in which the first, second, and third plastics material flakes are cleaned to remove contaminants adhering to the flake.

The separation process of claim 30 , further comprising a materials-preparation stage including a grinding operation in which the mixed-plastics stream is ground to establish first plastics material flakes associated with the first plastics material, second plastics material flakes associated with the second plastics material, and third plastics material flakes associated with the third plastics material and a cleaning operation in which the flakes are cleaned to remove contaminants adhering to the first, second, and third plastics material flakes.

The separation process of claim 1 , further comprising a materials-preparation stage including a grinding operation in which the first, second, and third plastics materials are ground to establish first plastics material flakes associated with the first plastics material, second plastics material flakes associated with the second plastics material, and third plastics material flakes associated with the third plastics material.

36. The separation process of claim 35 , wherein the materials-preparation stage further includes a cleaning operation in which the first, second, and third plastics material flakes are cleaned to remove contaminants adhering to the flakes.

37. The separation process of claim 36 , wherein the cleaning operation includes magnetically separating metal particles from the first, second, and third plastics material flakes using a magnet, hot-water washing the first, second, and third plastics material flakes using hot water to remove contaminants, and cold-water washing the first, second, and third plastics material flakes to remove contaminants.

38. A separation process comprising

the operation of separating a plastics material having a first material density in a range of about 0.94 g/cm 3 to about 0.97 g/cm 3 from a different plastics material having a second material density in a range of about 0.90 g/cm 3 to about 0.92 g/cm 3 using fluid comprising vegetable oil and an additive configured to decrease surface tension and having a fluid density in the range of about 0.92 g/cm 3 to about 0.94 g/cm 3 .

39. The separation process of claim 38 , wherein the fluid density is in the range of 0.924 g/cm 3 to about 0.928 g/cm 3 .

40. A separation process comprising the operations of

separating first plastics flakes having a first material density from second plastics flakes having a relatively lighter second material density and third plastics flakes having relatively lighter third material density using a higher-density fluid having a first fluid density that is between the first and the relatively lighter second material densities and

separating the second plastics flakes from the third plastics flakes using a lower-density fluid comprising vegetable oil and having a relatively lower second fluid density that is between the relatively lighter second material density and the relatively lighter third material density.
