Abstract

A method of data transfer using short range technology. An originating short range wireless technology enabled device wirelessly communicates a first portion of content to a destination short range wireless technology enabled device along with location information that enables retrieval of a remaining portion of the content from a back office location. The destination short range wireless technology enabled device processes the first portion of content. The remaining portion of the content may be retrieved for processing by the destination short range wireless technology enabled device before the completion of processing of the first portion of content.

Claims (23)

1. A communications network comprising:

a first device configured to transmit a first digital rights management (DRM) credential and a first location designation via a first peer-to-peer communication;

a second device configured to transmit a first portion of a second content, a second digital rights management (DRM) credential, and a second location designation of a second portion of the second content via a second peer-to-peer communication, wherein the first portion of the second content and the second portion of the second content comprise the same type of content;

a server containing a first content referenced by the first location designation and the second portion of the second content referenced by the second location designation; and

a third device configured to receive the first DRM credentials and the first location designation from the first device via the first peer-to-peer communication, to provide the first DRM credential to the server, to access the first content referenced by the first location designation from the server, and to playback the first content, and configured to receive the first portion of the second content, the second DRM credentials, and the second location designation from the second device via the second peer-to-peer communication, to provide the second DRM credential to the server, to access the second portion of the second content referenced by the second location designation from the server, and to playback the second content.

2. The communications network of claim 1 , wherein the first and second peer-to-peer communications are promoted by at least one of infrared communications technology, Bluetooth technology, WiFi technology, near field communications (NFC) technology, universal serial bus (USB) technology, and IEEE-1394 firewire technology.

3. The communications network of claim 1 , wherein the first device is a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.

4. The communications network of claim 1 , wherein the third device is one of a mobile phone, mobile handset, mobile computer, video player, and audio player.

5. The communications network of claim 1 , wherein the server is a digital rights management server.

6. The communications network of claim 1 , wherein the amount of the first portion of the second content transmitted from the second device is based on an amount of time to retrieve the second portion of the second content.

7. A method of data transfer comprising:

receiving, by a second device, a first location information for a first content and a first digital rights management (DRM) authorization information from a first device via a first short range wireless technology;

providing, by the second device, the first DRM authorization information to a server that contains the first content referenced by the first location information; retrieving, by the second device, the first content referenced by the first location information from the server;

receiving, by the second device, a first portion of a second content, a second location information for a second portion of the second content, and a second digital rights management authorization information from another device via a second short range wireless technology, wherein the first portion of the second content and the second portion of the second content comprise the same type of content;

providing, by the second device, the second digital rights management authorization information to the server that contains the second portion of the second content referenced by the second location information; and

accessing, by the second device, the second portion of the second content referenced by the second location information from the server.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising processing, by the second device, the first content.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the processing the first content comprises playing the first content or displaying the first content.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first and second short range wireless technologies compriseat least one of infrared communications technology, Bluetooth technology, WiFi technology, near field communications (NFC) technology.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first device is a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second device is one of a mobile phone, mobile handset, mobile computer, video player, and audio player.

13. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first and second DRM authorization information is one of a digital credential certificate and a password.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein the accessing the second portion of the second content referenced by the second location information from the server is performed while simultaneously playing, by the second device, the first portion of the second content.
