Abstract

A method at a mobile device, and the mobile device, the method selecting a subset of radio access technologies available to the mobile device over which a predetermined set of services on the mobile device is available; and deselecting at least one radio access technology not within the selected subset of radio access technologies.

Claims (27)

1. A method at a mobile device comprising:

determining a set of required mobile services, such mobile services requiring a radio connection over at least one radio access technology;

selecting a subset of radio access technologies available to the mobile device over which the required mobile services on the mobile device are available; and

when the mobile device is in idle mode, deselecting at least one radio access technology not within the selected subset of radio access technologies,

wherein the deselecting at least one radio access technology saves resources on the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of radio access technologies is a single radio access technology.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the required mobile services are defined by a user, carrier, or manufacturer of the mobile device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the required mobile services vary based on time of day.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the required mobile services vary based on a selected profile.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selecting utilizes a prioritized list of possible radio access technologies.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radio access technologies include both licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the licensed spectrum includes one or more of global system for mobile communications, code division multiple access, universal mobile telecommunications standard, long term evolution, and long term evolution advanced.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the unlicensed spectrum includes at least one of WiFi, WiMAX, or Bluetooth™.

10. A mobile device, comprising:

a processor; and

a communications subsystem, wherein the processor and communications subsystem cooperate to:

determine a set of required mobile services, such mobile services requiring a radio connection over at least one radio access technology;

select a subset of radio access technologies available to the mobile device over which the required mobile services on the mobile device are available; and

when the mobile device is in idle mode, deselect at least one radio access technology not within the selected subset of radio access technologies, thereby saving resources on the mobile device.

11. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the subset of radio access technologies is a single radio access technology.

12. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the required mobile services are defined by a user, carrier, or manufacturer of the mobile device.

13. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the required mobile services vary based on time of day.

14. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the required mobile services vary based on a selected profile.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deselecting comprises deactivating monitoring of the at least one radio access technology.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deselecting comprises decreasing a monitoring frequency of the at least one radio access technology.

17. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the processor and communications subsystem cooperate to deselect by deactivating monitoring of the at least one radio access technology.

18. The mobile device of claim 10 , wherein the processor and communications subsystem cooperate to deselect by decreasing a monitoring frequency of the at least one radio access technology.
