Abstract

A method is disclosed for reading a machine-readable optical code encoding information formed in an image that is presented to a user. The method includes using a processor to receive the image with the machine-readable optical code; using a graphic user interface to visually present the received image on a display; using the graphic user interface to receive a user selection of the machine-readable optical code; using a processor to decode the selected machine-readable optical code; and using the graphic user interface to present information referenced by the decoded information on the display.

Claims (63)

1. A method comprising:

using a first processor to receive an image as an electronic document having one or more image elements, at least one of which references machine-readable optical code;

visually presenting the received image on a display having a graphic user interface;

parsing the electronic document to find an image element, analyzing the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code and, if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code, receiving a user selection of the machine-readable optical code from the graphic user interface;

using the first processor or a second processor to decode the selected machine-readable optical code; and

presenting information referenced by the decoded information on the graphic user interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information is a uniform resource locator (URL) and wherein the graphic user interface presents the information identified by the URL.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the information is a computer network address.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the graphic user interface includes a web browser interface and wherein the information presented on the display is a web-page corresponding to the URL.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the graphic user interface visually renders the image or the decoded information in a web browser interface.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image includes a plurality of user-selectable machine-readable optical codes.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the machine-readable optical code is a one-dimensional code, a two-dimensional code, a matrix code, a barcode, or a QR code.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the image includes a second machine-readable optical codes and further including using the graphical user interface to receive a user selection of the second machine-readable optical code, using the first or second processor to decode the selected second machine-readable optical code, and using the graphic user interface to present the decoded information on the display.

9. The method of claim 1 , further including analyzing the image and determining if the image contains a machine-readable optical code.

10. The method of claim 1 , further including providing a linking element corresponding to the machine-readable optical code in the image provided to the user and receiving a selection of the linking element in the graphical user interface.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic document is a hyper-text markup language (HTML) document.

12. A system comprising:

a first processor for receiving an image as an electronic document having one or more image elements, at least one of which references the machine-readable optical code;

means for causing the visual presentation of the received image on a display, parsing the electronic document to find an image element, analyzing the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code and, if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code, receiving a user selection of the machine-readable optical code;

the first processor or a second processor for decoding the selected machine-readable optical code; and

means for causing the presentation information referenced by the decoded information on the display.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the decoded information is a uniform resource locator (URL), the processor retrieves information referenced by the URL, and the graphic user interface presents the referenced information identified by the URL.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the information is a computer network address.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the graphic user interface includes a web browser interface and wherein the information presented on the display is a web-page corresponding to the URL.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the graphic user interface includes means for visually presenting the image or the decoded information in a web browser interface.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the image includes a plurality of user-selectable machine-readable optical codes.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the machine-readable optical code is a one-dimensional code, a two-dimensional code, a matrix code, a barcode, or a QR code.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the image includes a second machine-readable optical codes and further including means for using the graphical user interface to receive a user selection of the second machine-readable optical code, using the processor to decode the selected second machine-readable optical code, and using the graphic user interface to present the decoded information on the display.

20. The system of claim 12 , further including means for analyzing the image and determining if the image contains a machine-readable optical code.

21. The system of claim 12 , further including means for providing a linking element corresponding to the machine-readable optical code in the image provided to the user and receiving a selection of the linking element in the graphical user interface.

22. A comprising:

using a first processor to receive an image as an electronic document having one or more image elements, at least one of which references the machine-readable optical code;

visually presenting the received image on a display of a graphical user interface;

parsing the electronic document to find an image element, analyzing the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code and, if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code, and rendering the machine readable optical code as a user-selectable element in the graphical user interface;

using the graphic user interface to receive a user selection of the selectable element;

decoding the selected machine-readable optical code; and

using the graphic user interface to present information referenced by the decoded information on the display.

23. A method comprising:

determining whether image elements from a received image file include machine-readable optical code;

in response to determining that image elements from the received image file include machine-readable code, decoding the machine-readable code;

assessing whether the decoded machine-readable code includes a reference to a network address; and

modifying the received image file to include a linking element referencing the network address.

24. The method of claim 23 , further comprising parsing the received image file to find an image element, analyzing the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code.

25. The method of claim 23 , wherein the linking element is a hyperlink and the network address is a URL.

26. The method of claim 23 , wherein the machine-readable code is a one-dimensional code, a two-dimensional code, a matrix code, a barcode, or a QR code.

27. The method of claim 23 , in response to a selection of the linking element, presenting information referenced by the decoded information on a graphic user interface.

28. A tangible computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions comprising:

instructions for determining whether image elements from a received image file include machine-readable optical code;

instructions for decoding the machine-readable code in response to determining that image elements from the received image file include machine-readable code;

instructions for assessing whether the decoded machine-readable code includes a reference to a network address; and

instructions for modifying the received image file to include a linking element referencing the network address.

29. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , further comprising instructions for parsing the received image file to find an image element and analyzing the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code.

30. The computer readable medium of claim 28 , instructions for presenting information referenced by the decoded information on a graphic user interface in response to a selection of the linking element.

31. A system comprising:

a processor configured to:

determine whether image elements from a received image file include machine-readable optical code;

decode the machine-readable code in response to determining that image elements from the received image file include machine-readable code;

assess whether the decoded machine-readable code includes a reference to a network address; and

modify the received image file to include a linking element referencing the network address; and

a graphical user interface configured to present information referenced by the decoded information on a graphic user interface in response to a selection of the linking element.

32. The system of claim 31 , wherein the processor is further configured to parse the received image file to find an image element and analyze the found image element to determine if the found image element contains the machine-readable optical code.

33. The system of claim 31 , wherein the linking element is a hyperlink and the network address is a URL.

34. The system of claim 31 , wherein the machine-readable code is a one-dimensional code, a two-dimensional code, a matrix code, a barcode, or a QR code.
