Therapies for chronic renal failure
View Patent ↗The present invention provides methods for the treatment, and pharmaceuticals for use in the treatment, of mammalian subjects in, or at risk of chronic renal failure, or at risk of a need for renal replacement therapy. The methods involve the administration of certain proteins of, or based upon, the osteogenic protein/bone morphogenetic protein (OP/BMP) family within the TGF-β superfamily of proteins.
1. A method of treating chronic renal failure in a mammal comprising the step of administering to said mammal a therapeutically effective amount of OP-1.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said chronic renal failure is associated with renal fibrosis.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mammal has less than about 50% of the functional nephron units of a mammal having intact healthy kidneys.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mammal has a GFR which is chronically less than about 50% of a GFRexp for said mammal.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mammal is a human male weighing at least about 50 kg and has a GFR which is chronically less than about 50ml/min.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mammal is a human female weighing at least about 40 kg and has a GFR which is chronically less than about 40ml/min.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of the bone morphogenic protein is selected from parenteral, intravenous, intraperitoneal, or into the renal capsule.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration of the bone morphogenic protein is by an implanted device.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein a stent has been implanted into the mammal for administration of the bone morphogenic protein.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the stent is selected from an intravenous stent, an intraperitoneal stent or an intracapsular stent.
