Abstract

A method begins by obtaining a slipstream of a liquid. The slipstream of liquid is then mixed upstream of an injection pump with a latex comprising a drag reducing polymer to produce a drag reducing mixture. The drag reducing mixture is then injected into a liquid hydrocarbon to produce a treated liquid hydrocarbon.

Claims (25)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining a slipstream of a liquid,

mixing the slipstream of the liquid upstream of an injection pump with a latex comprising a drag reducing polymer to produce a drag reducing mixture,

injecting the drag reducing mixture into a liquid hydrocarbon to produce a treated liquid hydrocarbon,

wherein the liquid hydrocarbon has an asphaltene content of at least 3 weight percent and an API gravity of less than about 26° and

wherein the viscosity of the treated liquid hydrocarbon is not less than the viscosity of the liquid hydrocarbon prior to treatment with the drag reducing polymer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid is a liquid hydrocarbon.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid is a solvent.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid is obtained from a pipeline.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing mixture is injected into the liquid hydrocarbon in a pipeline.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the friction loss associated with the turbulent flow through the pipeline is reduced by suppressing the growth of turbulent eddies with the treated liquid hydrocarbons.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of drag reducing polymer in the treated liquid hydrocarbons ranges from about 0.1 to about 500 ppmw.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer has a solubility parameter within 4 MPa 1/2 of the solubility parameter of the liquid hydrocarbon.

9. A method comprising:

obtaining a slipstream of liquid hydrocarbons from a pipeline containing liquid hydrocarbons,

mixing the slipstream of liquid hydrocarbons upstream of an injection pump with a latex comprising a drag reducing polymer to produce a drag reducing mixture,

injecting the drag reducing mixture into the liquid hydrocarbons into the pipeline to produce treated liquid hydrocarbons,

wherein the liquid hydrocarbon has an asphaltene content of at least 3 weight percent and an API gravity of less than about 26° and

wherein the viscosity of the treated liquid hydrocarbon is not less than the viscosity of the liquid hydrocarbon prior to treatment with the drag reducing polymer.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the liquid hydrocarbons are obtained from the pipeline on a first side of the pipeline and returned to the pipeline as treated liquid hydrocarbons on a second side of the pipeline, wherein the first side of the pipeline and the second side of the pipeline are separated by a pipeline pump.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first side of the pipeline is the low pressure side of the pipeline pump and the second side of the pipeline is the high pressure side of the pipeline pump.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the amount of drag reducing polymer in the treated liquid hydrocarbons ranges from about 0.1 to about 500 ppmw.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the drag reducing polymer has a solubility parameter within 4 MPa 1/2 of the solubility parameter of the liquid hydrocarbon.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the friction loss associated with the turbulent flow through the pipeline is reduced by suppressing the growth of turbulent eddies with the treated liquid hydrocarbons.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein solids preventing the flow of the drag reducing mixture into the liquid hydrocarbons are not formed.
