Abstract

A hemodialysis system includes (i) a plurality of pump rollers: (ii) a fluid heater, the pump rollers and the heater positioned and arranged to accept a horizontally loaded dialysate cassette: (iii) a dialyzer; (iv) a sorbent cartridge; and (v) wherein the dialysate cassette includes first and second tubes for horizontal interaction with the pump rollers and a third tube for horizontal interaction with the heater, the cassette in fluid communication with the sorbent cartridge.

Claims (25)

1. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a housing configured to hold (i) at least a portion of a blood carrying disposable inside of the housing and (ii) a dialyzer of the blood carrying disposable outside of the housing;

first and second motors supported by the housing;

a plurality of peristaltic pump rollers driven by the first and second motors;

a dialysate cassette; and

a horizontal surface of the housing exposing the plurality of peristaltic pump rollers for operation with the dialysate cassette loaded horizontally adjacent the horizontal surface.

2. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of peristaltic pump rollers are linear rollers.

3. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which is structured so that the horizontal surface of the housing resides beneath the dialysate cassette when loaded horizontally adjacent the horizontal surface.

4. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the cassette includes a member having an opening exposing a tube of the cassette to pump rollers driven by one of the first and second motors.

5. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the cassette includes a plurality of ports for communication with a plurality of supply containers.

6. The hemodialysis system of claim 5 , wherein the supply containers are dialysate supply containers.

7. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a sorbent cartridge connected fluidly to the dialysate cassette.

8. The hemodialysis system of claim 7 , wherein the sorbent cartridge is additionally in fluid communication with the dialyzer.

9. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a sorbent cartridge in fluid communication with the cassette, and which is configured to regenerate a portion of the dialysate leaving the dialyzer.

10. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a heater, and wherein the dialysate cassette includes a member having a cutout that exposes a tube positioned and arranged to be heated by the heater when the pump rollers are positioned to operate with the horizontally loaded dialysate cassette.

11. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a blood leak detector, and wherein the dialysate cassette includes a portion located downstream from the dialyzer, the downstream portion positioned and arranged to operate with the blood leak detector when the pump rollers are positioned to operate with the horizontally loaded dialysate cassette.

12. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a conductivity sensor, and wherein the cassette includes a portion located upstream from the dialyzer, the portion positioned and arranged to operate with the blood leak detector when the pump rollers are positioned and arranged to operate with the horizontally loaded dialysate cassette.

13. The hemodialysis system of claim 1 , which includes first and second dialysate pumps and a heater, and wherein the dialysate cassette includes first, second and third tubes, positioned and arranged to operate respectively with the first and second dialysate pumps and the heater.

14. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a housing including a horizontal surface;

a blood carrying disposable having at least a portion located inside the housing;

a dialyzer located outside of the housing and supported by the housing;

a dialysate cassette;

first and second motors supported by the housing; and

a plurality of peristaltic pump rollers driven by the first and second motors, the horizontal surface of the housing exposing the plurality of peristaltic pump rollers for operation with the dialysate cassette loaded horizontally adjacent the horizontal surface.
