Abstract

Bearing assemblies, apparatuses, and motor assemblies using the same are disclosed. In an embodiment, a bearing assembly includes a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis. At least some of the superhard bearing elements may include a first end surface, a second end surface generally opposite the first end surface, a first side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface, a second side surface generally opposite the first side surface, and a bearing surface extending between the first end surface, the second end surface, the first side surface and the second side surface. Such superhard bearing elements may also include a ramped feature negatively sloping away from the bearing surface. The bearing assembly may further include a support ring that carries the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

Claims (52)

1. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the superhard bearing elements including a bearing surface, at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements defining a plurality of converging channels therebetween, each of the plurality of converging channels including a banked surface that slopes with respect to a radial direction and a circumferential direction, the banked surface being substantially planar to direct fluid flow onto at least some of the bearing surfaces of the plurality of superhard bearing elements; and

a support ring that carries the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 wherein the at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements comprise:

a first end surface;

a second end surface generally opposite the first end surface,

a first side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface, the first side surface being substantially planar,

a second side surface generally opposite the first side surface, the second side surface being substantially planar,

the bearing surface extending between the first end surface, the second end surface, the first side surface, and the second side surface.

The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein at least one of the plurality of converging channels is formed between the banked surface of one of the at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements and the first side surface of an adjacent one of the at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 3 wherein the banked surface is oriented in a rotational direction of the support ring.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein the plurality of converging channels converge toward the second end surfaces of the at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein at least one of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements comprises a ramped feature including a substantially planar surface sloping away from the bearing surface.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 6 wherein the ramped feature slopes from the bearing surface at an angle of about 35 degrees to about 55 degrees relative to the bearing surface.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 6 wherein the ramped feature comprises a surface extending between the first end surface, the second side surface, and an edge formed on the bearing surface extending between the first end surface and the second side surface.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 2 wherein at least one of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements comprises a substrate and a superhard table bonded to the substrate.

10. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, at least some of the superhard bearing elements including:

a first end surface;

a second end surface generally opposite the first end surface;

a first side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface, the first side surface being substantially planar;

a second side surface generally opposite the first side surface, the second side surface being substantially planar;

a bearing surface extending between the first end surface, the second end surface, the first side surface and the second side surface; and

a ramped feature including a substantially planar surface sloping away from the bearing surface and toward the first end surface, the ramped feature further sloping toward one of the first side surface or the second side surface; and

a support ring that carries the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the ramped feature slopes away from the bearing surface at an angle of about 30 degrees to about 60 degrees relative to the bearing surface.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the ramped feature comprises a surface extending between the first end surface, the first side surface, and an edge formed on the bearing surface.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the ramped feature of one or more of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements is circumferentially oriented in a rotational direction of the support ring.

14. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the ramped feature of one or more of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements is configured to direct lubricating fluid onto the bearing surfaces of the at least some of the plurality of superhard bearing elements.

15. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein at least one of the first end surface or the second end surface is arcuate.

16. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein at least one of the plurality of superhard bearing elements exhibits a wedge shape.

17. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein at least one of the plurality of superhard bearing elements comprises a substrate and a superhard table bonded to the substrate.

18. The bearing assembly of claim 17 wherein the superhard table comprises a polycrystalline diamond.

19. The bearing apparatus of claim 17 wherein the ramped feature including a substantially planar surface includes at least some of the substrate and some of the superhard table bonded to the substrate.

20. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the bearing surface of one or more of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements comprises a convexly-curved bearing surface.

21. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the bearing surface of one or more of the at least some of the superhard bearing elements comprises a concavely-curved bearing surface.

22. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the axis is a thrust axis, and wherein the support ring and the plurality of superhard bearing elements define a thrust-bearing assembly.

23. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the axis is a rotation axis, and wherein the support ring and the plurality of superhard bearing elements define a radial bearing assembly.

24. The bearing assembly of claim 10 wherein the plurality of the superhard bearing elements are brazed, interference-fitted, or fastened to the support ring.

25. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a first bearing assembly including:

a first plurality of superhard bearing elements distributed circumferentially about an axis, at least some of the first plurality of superhard bearing elements including:

a first end surface and a second end surface generally opposite the first end surface;

a first side surface extending between the first end surface and the second end surface;

a second side surface generally opposite the first side surface;

a bearing surface extending between the first end surface, the second end surface, the first side surface, and the second side surface; and

a ramped feature including a substantially planar surface sloping away from the bearing surface and toward the first end surface, the ramped feature further sloping toward one of the first side surface or the second side surface; and

a first support ring that carries the plurality of superhard bearing elements; and

a second bearing assembly including:

a second plurality of superhard bearing elements generally opposed the first plurality of superhard bearing elements of the first bearing assembly; and

a second support ring that carries the second plurality of superhard bearing elements.

26. The bearing apparatus of claim 25 wherein the first bearing assembly is configured as a rotor and the second bearing assembly is configured as a stator.
