Abstract

Embodiments relate to an apparatus and method for encoding and decoding data. The method includes arranging, by an encoder, data into a plurality of blocks. Each block corresponds to a sub-region of the data. The method further includes assigning, by the encoder, the plurality of blocks into groups such that a spread value associated with each group meets a desired criterion. The spread value indicates a level of dissimilarity or similarity among members of a group. The method further includes generating, by the encoder, a set of measurements for at least one group of blocks. The set of measurements is coded data representing the blocks corresponding to the at least one group.

Claims (32)

1 . A method for encoding data, the method comprising:

arranging, by an encoder, data into a plurality of blocks, each block corresponding to a sub-region of the data;

assigning, by the encoder, the plurality of blocks into groups such that a spread value associated with each group meets a desired criterion, the spread value indicating a level of dissimilarity or similarity among members of a group; and

generating, by the encoder, a set of measurements for at least one group of blocks, the set of measurements being coded data representing the blocks corresponding to the at least one group.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the assigning step assigns one block of the plurality of blocks to two groups.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the encoder, assignment information indicating which blocks belong to which group.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating an index of a first block and information indicating a plurality of group identifiers, each group identifier identifying a particular group associated with a block in a sequence of blocks of which said first block is a member.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating indices of blocks assigned to a respective group.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating, by the encoder, at least one datagram of a plurality of datagrams, each datagram including the set of measurements for a respective group.

7 . A method for decoding data, the data including a plurality of blocks having been arranged into groups, each block corresponding to a sub-region of the data, the method comprising:

receiving, by a decoder, assignment information indicating assignments of blocks to a group and a set of measurements representing coded data for the blocks corresponding to the group; and

reconstructing, by the decoder, the data for sub-regions corresponding to the blocks of the group based on the set of measurements and the assignment information.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the receiving step receives at least a portion of the assignment information and the set of measurements in at least one of a plurality of datagrams, and each datagram includes header information which allows the datagram to be parsed independently.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating an index of a first block and information indicating a plurality of group identifiers, each group identifier identifying a particular group associated with a block in a sequence of blocks of which said first block is a member.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating indices of blocks assigned to a respective group.

11 . An apparatus for encoding data, the apparatus comprising:

an encoder configured to arrange data into a plurality of blocks, each block corresponding to a sub-region of the data,

the encoder configured to assign the plurality of blocks into groups such that a spread value associated with each group meets a desired criterion, the spread value indicating a level of dissimilarity or similarity among members of a group, and

the encoder configured to generate a set of measurements for at least one group of blocks, the set of measurements being coded data representing the blocks corresponding to the at least one group.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the encoder assigns one block of the plurality of blocks to two groups.

13 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the encoder is configured to generate assignment information indicating which blocks belong to which group.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating an index of a first block and information indicating a plurality of group identifiers, each group identifier identifying a particular group associated with a block in a sequence of blocks of which said first block is a member.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating indices of blocks assigned to a respective group.

16 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the encoder is configured to generate at least one datagram of a plurality of datagrams, each datagram including the set of measurements for a respective group.

17 . An apparatus for decoding data, the data including a plurality of blocks having been arranged into groups, each block corresponding to a sub-region of the data, the apparatus comprising:

a decoder configured to receive assignment information indicating assignments of blocks to a group and a set of measurements representing coded data for the blocks corresponding to the group, and

the decoder is configured to reconstruct the data for sub-regions corresponding to the blocks of the group based on the set of measurements and the assignment information.

18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the decoder is configured to receive at least a portion of the assignment information and the set of measurements in at least one of a plurality of datagrams, and each datagram includes header information which allows the datagram to be parsed independently.

19 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating an index of a first block and information indicating a plurality of group identifiers, each group identifier identifying a particular group associated with a block in a sequence of blocks of which said first block is a member.

20 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the assignment information includes information indicating indices of blocks assigned to a respective group.
