Abstract

A system for managing storage space on an electronic storage medium is provided in which a file format for stored data allows for progressive deletion of low-significance data, for example in a video or audio file, while allowing the remaining portions of the file to be subsequently retrieved. The file format allows for the ready deletion of low-significance data without having to open, edit and subsequently rewrite the data. Furthermore, rules-based algorithms for the deletion of low-significance data allow a user to store and progressively delete such low-significance data in accordance with time parameters, available storage space and the like, without having to delete the full file.

Claims (50)

1. A method implemented by a computer system for managing content for a plurality of consumers, the method comprising:

receiving an access request for a specified content item from a particular one of the plurality of consumers;

accessing a database serving as a directory of content items and associated metadata in response to the access request;

selecting a particular one of a plurality of sources of the specified content item to be used for sourcing the access request, based at least in part on the metadata associated with the specified content item; and

facilitating access to the specified content item for the particular consumer from the particular source.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the specified content item is suitable for presentation on a device operated by the particular one of the plurality of consumers and the computer system is operated by a remote service.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the remote service comprises a provider of the content items.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the content items are provided by a plurality of different content providers, and the remote service is independent of the content providers.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the metadata used in the selecting includes at least in part metadata relating to one of a content item quality level and compression level.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the metadata used in the selecting includes at least in part metadata relating to digital rights entitlements recognized by a provider of the specified content item who is independent of the consumers.

7. The method of claim 2 wherein the metadata used in the selecting includes at least in part metadata relating to at least one of replacement ability, cost, time and policies, and local versus remote storage.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the facilitating access comprises facilitating streaming of the specified content item to the device.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the facilitating access comprises facilitating downloading of the specified content item to the device.

10. The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of sources comprises a plurality of alternative sources.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the access request is received from the device and the selecting is based on first metadata relating to an entitlement of the particular consumer to the specified content item as recognized by the remote service, wherein the remote service is independent of the consumers.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selecting is further based on second metadata relating to a previous interaction of the particular consumer regarding the specified content item.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the previous interaction relates to the specified content item as being in the possession of the particular consumer.

14. A method implemented by a computer system for managing content for a plurality of consumers, the method comprising:

accessing a database serving as a directory of content items and associated metadata;

determining whether to store or delete one of a plurality of copies of a specified one of the content items in one of a plurality of storage systems, wherein the determining is based at least in part on the metadata associated with the specified content item; and

facilitating the storing or deletion of the copy of the specified content item in the particular storage system.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the specified content item is suitable for presentation on a device operated by a particular one of the plurality of consumers and the computer system is operated by a remote service.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the remote service comprises a provider of the content items.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the content items are provided by a plurality of different content providers, and the remote service is independent of the content providers.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to at least one of a content item quality level and a compression level.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to digital rights entitlements recognized by a provider of the specified content item who is independent of the consumers.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to at least one of replacement ability, cost, time, policies, and local versus remote storage.

21. The method of claim 15 , wherein the deletion comprises a partial deletion that results in retention of a lower quality version of the specified content item.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the lower quality version comprises a version or format lacking one or more portions of low significance data that are present in a higher quality version of the specified content item.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the lower quality version is retained at a user device operated by the particular consumer and the determining is based on metadata indicating that a higher quality version of the content item is accessible from a source external to the user device.

24. The method of claim 14 , wherein the copy of the specified content item is uploaded from a user device operated by a particular consumer to one of a plurality of remote storage systems associated with the computer system.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the copy of the specified content item is a higher quality version and the version at the user device is changed from the higher quality version to a lower quality version.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein the uploading is automatically triggered upon creation of the specified content item in response to an input from at least one of a camera, microphone, and other sensor.

27. A method implemented by a computer system for managing content for a plurality of consumers, the method comprising:

maintaining a database serving as a directory of content items and associated metadata;

receiving an access request from a particular one of the plurality of consumers for a specified one of the content items;

determining whether to grant the access request based at least in part on the metadata associated with the specified content item; and

facilitating access to the specified content item for the particular consumer if the access request is granted.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the specified content item is suitable for presentation on a device operated by the particular one of the plurality of consumers and the computer system is operated by a remote service.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the remote service comprises a provider of the content items.

30. The method of claim 28 , wherein the content items are provided by a plurality of different content providers, and the remote service is independent of the content providers.

31. The method of claim 28 , wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to one of a content item quality level and compression level.

32. The method of claim 28 , wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to digital rights entitlements recognized by a provider of the specified content item who is independent of the consumers.

33. The method of claim 28 wherein the metadata used in the determining includes at least in part metadata relating to at least one of replacement ability, cost, time, policies, and local versus remote storage.

34. The method of claim 28 , wherein the facilitating access comprises facilitating streaming of the specified content item to the device.

35. The method of claim 28 , wherein the facilitating access comprises facilitating downloading of the specified content item to the device.

36. The method of claim 28 , wherein the associated metadata includes identification of a plurality of alternative sources of the specified content item.

37. The method of claim 28 , wherein the access request is received from the device and the determining is based on first metadata relating to an entitlement of the particular consumer to the specified content item as recognized by the remote service, wherein the remote service is independent of the consumers.

38. The method of claim 37 , wherein the determining is further based on second metadata relating to a previous interaction of the particular consumer regarding the specified content item.

39. The method of claim 38 , wherein the previous interaction relates to the specified content item as being in the possession of the particular consumer.
