Abstract

A system comprising a sensing device and a capacitive sense array configured to track the position of a stylus and synchronize the capacitive sense array to the stylus transmit signal. The system is configured to track the position of both a stylus and a passive touch object. The system is further configured to track the position of the stylus using self capacitance sensing and track the position of the passive touch object using mutual capacitance sensing. The system further configured to modulate the stylus transmit signal to include additional data to support additional stylus functions.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a capacitive sense array comprised of rows and columns of electrodes, configured to detect a presence of a passive touch object and a stylus, wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to receive a signal from the stylus via capacitive coupling; and

a processing device, coupled to the capacitive sense array, configured to receive the signal received by the capacitive sense array, wherein the processing device is a timing master, wherein the processing device is further configured to synchronize operation of the capacitive sense array to the stylus by adjusting timing of the capacitive sense array to match the stylus as the timing master.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capacitive sense array operates in an all-points addressable mutual capacitance sense array in a first mode and as a coupled-charge receiver in a second mode.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing device is configured to substantially simultaneously track positions of both the passive touch object and the stylus on the capacitive sense array.

The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to operate as a mutual capacitance sense array during the tracking of the position of the passive touch object in a first mode, and wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to operate as a coupled-charge receiver during the tracking of the position of the stylus in a second of the at least two modes.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the capacitive sense array is comprised of row electrodes and column electrodes, wherein the processing device is configured to track a first position of the stylus utilizing both the row electrodes and column electrodes as receive (RX) electrodes, and wherein the processing device is configured to track a second position of the passive touch object using one of the row electrodes or column electrodes as the RX electrodes.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the stylus is turned on by at least one of a manual switch, a touch on a capacitive touch sensor disposed on the stylus, or an applied force on a tip of the stylus.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing device comprises a demodulation block to demodulate the signal to retrieve additional data that is modulated into the signal.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the additional data is modulated into the signal by at least one of amplitude shift keying, frequency shift keying, On-Off Keying, Pulse Position Shift keying, binary phase shift keying, or quadrature phase shift keying.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the additional data includes at least one of an applied force value, a button status data, or a battery status data.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the passive touch object is a finger and the stylus is an active stylus.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the stylus provides the transmit signal if the stylus is contacting the capacitive sense array.

12. A method comprising:

receiving a transmit signal at a capacitive sense array from a stylus via a capacitive coupling between the capacitive sense array and the stylus, wherein the stylus is a timing master;

synchronizing operation of the capacitive sense array to the stylus by adjusting timing of the capacitive sense array to match the stylus as the timing master, and wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to operate in a first mode for finger position tracking of a touch object and a second mode for stylus position tracking of the stylus; and

when synchronized, switching the capacitive sense array between the first mode and the second mode.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the capacitive sense array comprises row electrodes and column electrodes, wherein the capacitive sense array in the second mode uses both the row electrodes and column electrodes as receive electrodes to receive the transmit signal from the stylus for the stylus position tracking of the stylus, and wherein the capacitive sense array in the first mode uses one of the row electrodes or column electrodes as the receive electrodes to receive a second transmit signal from transmit electrodes of the capacitive sense array for the finger position tracking of the touch object.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

performing the finger position tracking;

performing the stylus position tracking concurrently with said performing the finger position tracking; and

differentiating positions of the stylus and the touch object using at least one of frequency modulation, amplitude modulation, phase modulation, or code modulation.

The method of claim 14 , wherein said differentiating further comprises demodulating the transmit signal to extract additional data that is modulated into the transmit signal by at least one of amplitude shift keying, frequency shift keying, binary phase shift modulation, or quadrature phase shift modulation.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the additional data includes at least one of an applied force value, a button status data, or a battery status data.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing the transmit signal if the stylus is contacting the capacitive sense array.

18. A system comprising:

a capacitive sense array;

a stylus, wherein the stylus is configured to provide a transmit signal to the capacitive sense array via capacitive coupling, wherein the stylus is a timing master; and

a sensing device coupled to the capacitive sense array, wherein the sensing device is configured to receive the transmit signal from the stylus via the capacitive coupling, and to synchronize operation of the capacitive sense array to operation of the stylus by adjusting timing of the capacitive sense array to match the stylus as the timing master.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to substantially simultaneously track positions of both a passive touch object and the stylus on the capacitive sense array.

The system of claim 19 , wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to operate as a mutual capacitance sense array during the tracking of the position of the passive touch object in a first mode, and wherein the capacitive sense array is configured to operate as a coupled-charge receiver during the tracking of the position of the stylus in a second mode.
