Abstract

A caller information server provides caller identification (ID) information to a mobile device. The server receives caller ID information from local address books stored on multiple mobile devices. The caller information server aggregates the received caller ID information to generate a pooled address book. The caller information server may determine whether names within the caller ID information are legitimate and store or filter the information accordingly. When a mobile device receives a call from a telephone number for which it lacks caller ID information in its local address book, the mobile device sends a request for the caller ID information for the telephone number, to the caller information server. The server identifies caller ID information associated with the telephone number in the pooled address book, and sends this information to the mobile device.

Claims (92)

1. A computer-implemented method of providing caller identification (ID) information to a mobile device, comprising

receiving caller ID information from local address books of a plurality of mobile devices used by a plurality of different users;

generating a pooled address book that aggregates the caller ID information received from the plurality of mobile devices;

receiving a request from a first mobile device used by a first user for caller ID information associated with a telephone number of a second mobile device used by a second user, the caller ID information associated with the telephone number not present in a local address book of the first mobile device;

identifying the caller ID information associated with the telephone number in the pooled address book, the identified caller ID information received from a local address book of a third mobile device used by a third user; and

sending the identified caller ID information associated with the telephone number to the first mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving caller ID information from local address books comprises:

receiving one or more of telephone numbers, names, addresses, job titles, and pictures from local address books stored on the plurality of mobile devices.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a white list of legitimate names; and

storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the white list of legitimate names.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a list of subjective identifiers; and

not storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the list of subjective identifiers.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

detecting conflicting information associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information, wherein the conflicting information results from the received caller ID information indicating different information associated with a same telephone number; and

analyzing the received caller ID information to select resolved information that resolves the conflicting information.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving requests from the plurality of mobile devices for caller ID information associated with telephone numbers from which communications were made to the plurality of the mobile devices;

analyzing the requests from the plurality of mobile devices to detect nuisance communications that the plurality of different users are likely to decline to answer; and

responsive to the analysis indicating that a telephone number from which a communication was made to a mobile device is associated with a nuisance call, identifying the telephone number as being associated with a nuisance communication in the identified caller ID information sent to the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving communications data describing communication statistics from the plurality of mobile devices;

analyzing the communications data to identify stale caller ID information within the pooled address book; and

removing the stale caller ID information from the pooled address book.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium encoded with executable computer program code for providing caller identification (ID) information to a mobile device, the computer program code comprising program code for:

receiving caller ID information from local address books of a plurality of mobile devices used by a plurality of different users;

generating a pooled address book that aggregates the caller ID information received from the plurality of mobile devices;

receiving a request from a first mobile device used by a first user for caller ID information associated with a telephone number of a second mobile device used by a second user, the caller ID information associated with the telephone number not present in a local address book of the first mobile device;

identifying the caller ID information in the pooled address book associated with the telephone number in the pooled address book, the identified caller ID information received from a local address book of a third mobile device used by a third user; and

sending the identified caller ID information associated with the telephone number to the first mobile device.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , herein receiving caller ID information from local address books comprises:

receiving one or more of telephone numbers, names, addresses, job titles, and pictures from local address books stored on the plurality of mobile devices.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a white list of legitimate names; and

storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the white list of legitimate names.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a list of subjective identifiers; and

not storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the list of subjective identifiers.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

detecting conflicting information associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information, wherein the conflicting information results from the received caller ID information indicating different information associated with a same telephone number; and

analyzing the received caller ID information to select resolved information that resolves the conflicting information.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving requests from the plurality of mobile devices for caller ID information associated with telephone numbers from which communications were made to the plurality of mobile devices;

analyzing the requests from the plurality of mobile devices to detect nuisance communications that the plurality of different users are likely to decline to answer; and

responsive to the analysis indicating that a telephone number from which a communication was made to a mobile device is associated with a nuisance call, identifying the telephone number as being associated with a nuisance communication in the identified caller ID information sent to the mobile device.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving communications data describing communication statistics from the plurality of mobile devices;

analyzing the communications data to identify stale caller ID information within the pooled address book; and

removing the stale caller ID information from the pooled address book.

15. A computer for providing caller identification (ID) information to a mobile device, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing executable computer program instructions comprising instructions for:

receiving caller ID information from local address books of a plurality of mobile devices used by a plurality of different users;

generating a pooled address book that aggregates the caller ID information received from the plurality of mobile devices;

receiving a request from a first mobile device used by a first user for caller ID information associated with a telephone number of a second mobile device used by a second user, the caller ID information associated with the telephone number not present in a local address book of the first mobile device;

identifying the caller ID information associated with the telephone number in the pooled address book, the identified caller ID information received from a local address book of a third mobile device used by a third user; and

sending the identified caller ID information associated with the telephone number to the first mobile device.

16. The computer of claim 15 , wherein receiving caller ID information from local address books comprises:

receiving one or more of telephone numbers, names, addresses, job titles, and pictures from local address books stored on the plurality of mobile devices.

17. The computer of claim 15 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a white list of legitimate names; and

storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the white list of legitimate names.

18. The computer of claim 15 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

identifying a name associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information;

determining whether the name is within a list of subjective identifiers; and

not storing the name in the pooled address book in association with the telephone number in the received caller ID information responsive to the name being within the list of subjective identifiers.

19. The computer of claim 15 , wherein generating the pooled address book comprises:

detecting conflicting information associated with a telephone number in the received caller ID information, wherein the conflicting information results from the received caller ID information indicating different information associated with a same telephone number; and

analyzing the received caller ID information to select resolved information that resolves the conflicting information.

20. The computer of claim 15 , further comprising:

receiving requests from the plurality of mobile devices for caller ID information associated with telephone numbers from which communications were made to the plurality of mobile devices;

analyzing the requests from the plurality of mobile devices to detect nuisance communications that the plurality of different users are likely to decline to answer; and

responsive to the analysis indicating that a telephone number from which a communication was made to a mobile device is associated with a nuisance call, identifying the telephone number as being associated with a nuisance communication in the identified caller ID information sent to the mobile device.

21. The computer of claim 15 , further comprising:

receiving communications data describing communication statistics from the plurality of mobile devices;

analyzing the communications data to identify stale caller ID information within the pooled address book; and

removing the stale caller ID information from the pooled address book.

22. A computer-implemented method of obtaining caller identification (ID) information associated with a telephone number, comprising:

sending caller ID information from a local address book of a first mobile device used by a first user to a caller information server, the caller information server adapted to generate a pooled address book that aggregates caller ID information received from local address books of a plurality of mobile devices used by a plurality of different users;

detecting an incoming communication received by the first mobile device from a telephone number of a second mobile device used by a second user;

responsive to the telephone number not being stored in the local address book of the first mobile device, sending a request to the caller information server requesting caller ID information for the telephone number, wherein the caller information server is adapted to identify caller ID information for the telephone number in the pooled address book, the identified caller ID information received from a local address book of a third mobile device used by a third user; and

receiving, from the caller information server, the caller ID information for the telephone number.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

determining whether to block the incoming communication responsive to the received caller ID information; and

blocking the incoming communication responsive to a positive determination.

24. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

storing the received caller ID information in the local address book of the first mobile device.
