Abstract

Devices for reducing the open circuit voltages of solar systems are described. In one embodiment, a solar system includes a string of a plurality of solar modules having an open circuit voltage. The solar system also includes a device for reducing the open circuit voltage of the string of the plurality of solar modules during an open circuit configuration.

Claims (23)

1. A solar module system coupled to a system load, the solar module system comprising:

a string having a plurality of solar modules electrically coupled in series between a first output terminal and a second output terminal, wherein the string is configured to provide power to the system load from the second output terminal, wherein the string has a string open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals, and wherein the string has an operating voltage across the first and second output terminals when the string is providing power to the system load; and

a current shunting device electrically coupled to the second output terminal, the current shunting device having a controller, a relay, a dissipative load, and a voltage measurement device, wherein the controller is configured to close the relay and shunt electrical current from the second output terminal to the dissipative load when the voltage measurement device measures the string open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals such that the string has a reduced open circuit voltage across the first and second output terminals, and wherein the reduced open circuit voltage is between the string open circuit voltage and the operating voltage.

2. The solar module system of claim 1 further comprising switching circuitry electrically coupled to the plurality of solar modules, the switching circuitry configured to selectively decouple the plurality of solar modules from the string when the string is not providing power to the system load.

3. The solar module system of claim 1 , wherein the current shunting device is housed in a module detachable from the solar module system.

4. The solar module system of claim 2 , wherein the switching circuitry includes a relay having a closed contact and two open contacts when the string is not providing power to the system load.

5. A device for electrically decoupling, from a string of a plurality of solar modules electrically coupled in series between a first output terminal and a second output terminal, two or more solar modules of the string during an open circuit configuration, the device comprising:

an electrical measurement device to measure a voltage or a current of the string;

an external bypass cable electrically coupled to the string in parallel with the two or more solar modules of the string;

switching circuitry including a relay having a bypass contact to switch the external bypass cable into series with the string and bypass the two or more solar modules, and a non-bypass contact to switch the two or more solar modules into series with the string and bypass the external bypass cable; and

a control device configured to

determine, based on the measured voltage or current of the string, whether the string is in the open circuit configuration, and

close the bypass contact and open the non-bypass contact, in response to determining the string is in the open circuit configuration.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the bypass contact is normally closed and the non-bypass contact is normally open, and wherein the relay includes a second bypass contact between the second output terminal and the external bypass cable.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the switching circuitry is housed in a module detachable from the string of the plurality of solar modules, and wherein the external bypass cable is external to the module.

8. A device for electrically decoupling, from a string of a plurality of solar modules electrically coupled in series between a first output terminal and a second output terminal, two or more solar modules of the string during an open circuit configuration, the device comprising:

an electrical measurement device to measure a voltage or a current of the string;

switching circuitry including a relay having a bypass contact to switch a bypass connection into series with the string and bypass the two or more solar modules, and a plurality of non-bypass contacts to switch the two or more solar modules into series with the string and bypass the bypass connection; and

a control device configured to

determine, based on the measured voltage or current of the string, whether the string is in the open circuit configuration, and

close the bypass contact and open the plurality of non-bypass contacts, in response to determining the string is in the open circuit configuration;

wherein the switching circuitry is included in a junction box of a solar module of the plurality of solar modules.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the bypass contact is normally closed and the plurality of non-bypass contacts are normally open.
