Abstract

A method of setting an address of a component that includes determining a characterization value associated with a consumable, calculating a number of address change operations based upon the characterization value, and setting a last address generated from the number of address change operations as the new address of the component, wherein the characterization value is determined based upon a usage of the consumable.

Claims (34)

1. A method of setting an address of a component, comprising:

determining a characterization value associated with a consumable;

calculating a number of address changes based upon the characterization value;

sending a number of address change commands equal to the calculated number of address changes to the component; and

setting the address of the component to a last address generated by the component in the course of performing a number of address change operations, wherein the number of address change operations corresponds to the number of address change commands.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characterization value is based upon a usage of the consumable such that the number of address change operations is dependent upon the usage of the consumable.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining the characterization value includes determining a measurement associated with the consumable.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the number of address change operations is performed after the component is reset.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calculating the number of address changes includes:

calculating a numerical value based upon the characterization value; and

randomly selecting a number less than or equal to the numerical value, wherein the selected number corresponds to the number of address change operations to be performed.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the characterization value changes with a usage of the consumable such that a range of values from which the random number is selected changes over the life of the consumable.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising setting the characterization value to a default value if the characterization value is determined to be outside a predetermined range.

8. A method of setting an address of a component in an imaging device, comprising:

determining a characterization value associated with a consumable of the imaging device;

performing a number of address change operations based upon the characterization value; and

setting a last address generated from the number of address change operations as the address of the component, wherein the characterization value is based upon a usage of the consumable such that the number of address change operations is dependent upon the usage of the consumable.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determining the characterization value includes determining a measurement associated with the consumable.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the number of address change operations is performed upon an initialization of the imaging device.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

calculating a numerical value based upon the characterization value; and

randomly selecting a number from a range of values defined by the numerical value, wherein the selected number corresponds to the number of address change operations to be performed.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the characterization value changes with the usage of the consumable such that the range of values defined by the calculated numerical value changes over the life of the consumable.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the selected number is less than or equal to the calculated numerical value.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising setting the characterization value to a default value if the characterization value is determined to be outside a predetermined range.

15. A method of setting a new address of a component, comprising:

receiving a plurality of address change commands;

performing a number of address change operations corresponding to the plurality of address change commands; and

setting a last address generated from the number of address change operations as the new address, wherein the number of address change operations is dependent upon a usage of a consumable.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the number of address change operations corresponds to a characterization value associated with the consumable.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the number of address change operations is calculated based upon measurements associated with an imaging substance.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the number of address change operations is calculated based upon a normalized page count.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the number of address change operations is a random number less than or equal to a characterization value associated with the consumable.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the characterization value changes with the usage of the consumable and the range of values from which the random number is selected changes over the life of the consumable.
