Abstract

A catheter for providing a blood flow includes first and second lumen parts having a distal portion with at least one port for delivering and receiving the flow from a patient and a non-linear profile along the distal portion.

Claims (52)

1. A catheter, comprising:

a first lumen comprising a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a distal opening; and

a second lumen comprising a proximal portion, a distal portion, and distal opening;

the proximal portion of the first lumen disposed adjacent the proximal portion of the second lumen between a proximal point and a bifurcation point;

the distal portion of the second lumen extending distally from the bifurcation point and forming a concave bend with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter, the distal portion of the second lumen extending from the bifurcation point to a free end;

wherein the distal opening of the first lumen is displaced a distance along the longitudinal axis of the catheter from the distal opening of the second lumen,

and wherein a segment of the distal portion of the second lumen intersects the longitudinal axis of the catheter, and

wherein the distal portion of the second lumen diverges away from the first lumen of the catheter at the bifurcation point, and

wherein the distal portion of the first lumen and the distal portion of the second lumen each consist of a first region that is concave with respect to the longitudinal axis and a second region that is convex with respect to the longitudinal axis.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a segment of the distal portion of the first lumen intersects the longitudinal axis of the catheter.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein a linear extension of the distal portion of the second lumen intersects the distal portion of the first lumen.

4. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a bend in the adjacent proximal portions of the first and second lumens.

5. A catheter comprising:

a proximal portion extending distally to a bifurcation, the proximal portion comprising a first lumen and a second lumen disposed within a single elongate body;

a first distal portion extending distally from the bifurcation to a first free end, the first distal portion consisting of a first region that is concave with respect to a longitudinal axis of the catheter and a second region that is convex with respect to the longitudinal axis;

a first distal opening disposed at the first free end, the first distal opening in fluid communication with the first lumen;

a second distal portion extending distally from the bifurcation to a second free end, the second distal portion consisting of a first region that is concave with respect to the longitudinal axis and a second region that is convex with respect to the longitudinal axis; and

a second distal opening disposed adjacent the second free end, the second distal opening in fluid communication with the second lumen;

wherein the first distal portion curves partially around the second free end; and

wherein the second distal portion diverges away from the first distal portion at the bifurcation.

6. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the second free end is disposed at a point proximal of the first free end.

7. The catheter of claim 6 , wherein a segment of the first distal portion intersects the longitudinal axis of the catheter.

8. The catheter of claim 6 , wherein

the first distal portion extends from the bifurcation to a first apex and from the first apex toward the longitudinal axis;

the second distal portion extends from the bifurcation to a second apex and from the second apex toward the longitudinal axis;

the first apex is displaced a distance along the longitudinal axis of the catheter from the second apex;

the first apex is a point of the first distal portion disposed furthest from the longitudinal axis of the catheter; and

the second apex is a point of the second distal portion disposed furthest from the longitudinal axis of the catheter.

9. The catheter of claim 6 , wherein a segment of the second distal portion intersects the longitudinal axis of the catheter.

10. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the first distal portion comprises a compound curve, such that a first center of curvature of the first distal portion and a second center of curvature of the first distal portion are located on opposite sides of the first distal portion.

11. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein a linear extension of the second distal portion intersects the first distal portion.

12. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein the second distal portion comprises a second compound curve, such that a first center of curvature of the second distal portion and a second center of curvature of the second distal portion are located on opposite sides of the second distal portion.

13. The catheter of claim 5 , further comprising a bend in the proximal portion of the catheter.

14. A catheter comprising:

a first elongate body defining a first lumen, the first elongate body comprising:

a proximal portion extending along a longitudinal axis of the catheter from a proximal point to a bifurcation point;

a distal portion that forms a concave bend with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter, the distal portion extending distally from the bifurcation point to a free end; and

a distal opening disposed adjacent a distal end of the first elongate body; and

a second elongate body defining a second lumen, the second elongate body comprising:

a proximal portion extending distally along the longitudinal axis of the catheter from the proximal point to the bifurcation point;

a distal portion that forms a concave bend with respect to the longitudinal axis of the catheter, the distal portion extending distally from the bifurcation point to a free end; and

a distal opening disposed adjacent a distal end of the second elongate body;

wherein

the distal end of the first elongate body is disposed proximal of the distal end of the second elongate body;
