Abstract

System and methods to determine the energy consumption per event type from usage data of portable devices are described. An example method to determine the energy consumption of events on a portable device includes receiving data associated with events occurring using at least a portion of the portable device during a time period, the data including a time at which each event type occurred and a total power consumed by the at least the portion of the portable device during the time period, analyzing, via a processor, the received data to determine an energy consumption per an event type of the at least a portion of the portable device based on the times at which each of the event types occurred and the total power consumed, and reporting the energy consumption per the event type for the at least the portion of portable device.

Claims (27)

1. A method to determine energy usage of a portable device, the method comprising:

receiving data associated with events occurring using at least a portion of the portable device during a time period, the data including a time at which each event type occurred and a total power consumed by the at least the portion of the portable device during the time period;

analyzing, via a processor, the received data to determine an energy consumption per event type of the at least a portion of the portable device based on the times at which the event types occurred and the total power consumed; and

reporting the energy consumption per event type for the at least the portion of the portable device.

2. A method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising reporting the energy consumption for each of the event types.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the events comprise a plurality of data attributes including at least one of an application name, an application type, a time an application was launched, an application description, a time an application was terminated, or the energy consumed during an application.

4. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein analyzing the received data comprises determining a first plurality of linear equations representative of energy expended in the at least a portion of the portable device for a second plurality of functions.

5. A method as defined in claim 4 , wherein analyzing the received data further comprises determining energy values corresponding to the second plurality of functions by applying a statistical method to the first plurality of linear equations.

6. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein an event type includes at least one of a phone application, a text messaging application, an instant messaging application, an e-mail application, a web browsing application, a media player application, a camera application, a document processing application, a streaming data from a server application, a live media application, a game application, a video recording application, a media editing application, a battery measurement application, an operating system function, a vibration actuator function, a speaker function, a key input function, a receiver function, a transmitter function, a touch screen function, or a bright display function.

7. A system to determine the energy usage of a portable device, the system comprising:

a data analyzer to:

analyze data received from a portable device, the data associated with events occurring during a time period on the portable device, the data including a time at which each event type was active on the portable device and a total power used in at least a portion of the portable device during the time period; and

determine an energy usage per event type of the at least the portion of the portable device based on the times at which the event type was active and the power usage.

8. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the data analyzer is to report the energy consumption for each of the event types.

9. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the events comprise a plurality of data attributes including at least one of an application name, an application type, a time an application was launched, an application description, a time an application was terminated, or the energy consumed during an application.

10. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the data analyzer is to analyze the received data by determining a first plurality of linear equations representative of energy expended in the at least a portion of the portable device for a second plurality of functions.

11. A system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the data analyzer is to analyze the received data by determining energy values corresponding to the second plurality of functions by applying a statistical method to the first plurality of linear equations.

12. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein an event type includes at least one of a phone application, a text messaging application, an instant messaging application, an e-mail application, a web browsing application, a media player application, a camera application, a document processing application, a streaming data from a server application, a live media application, a game application, a video recording application, a media editing application, a battery measurement application, an operating system function, a vibration actuator function, a speaker function, a key input function, a receiver function, a transmitter function, a touch screen function, or a bright display function.

13. A tangible article of manufacture comprising machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause the machine to at least:

access data associated with events occurring using at least a portion of the portable device during a time period, the data including a time at which each event type occurred and a total power consumed by the at least the portion of the portable device during the time period;

analyze the received data to determine an energy consumption per event type of the at least a portion of the portable device based on the times at which the event types occurred and the total power consumed; and

report the energy consumption per event type for the at least the portion of the portable device.

14. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 13 , wherein the instructions are further to cause the processor to report the energy consumption for each of the event types.

15. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 13 , wherein the events comprise a plurality of data attributes including at least one of an application name, an application type, a time an application was launched, an application description, a time an application was terminated, or the energy consumed during an application.

16. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 13 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to analyze the received data by determining a first plurality of linear equations representative of energy expended in the at least a portion of the portable device for a second plurality of functions.

17. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 16 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to analyze the received data by determining energy values corresponding to the second plurality of functions by applying a statistical method to the first plurality of linear equations.

18. An article of manufacture as defined in claim 13 , wherein an event type includes at least one of a phone application, a text messaging application, an instant messaging application, an e-mail application, a web browsing application, a media player application, a camera application, a document processing application, a streaming data from a server application, a live media application, a game application, a video recording application, a media editing application, a battery measurement application, an operating system function, a vibration actuator function, a speaker function, a key input function, a receiver function, a transmitter function, a touch screen function, or a bright display function.
