Abstract

A method is provided for reducing the peak power level in a combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) tones. The method is particularly effective when the information to be communicated is digital data consisting of long patterns of “1”s or “0”s. The digital data of the message is combined with a scrambling vector before the data is modulated. The randomization of data patterns, in turn, leads to a more random combination of OFDM tone amplitude being transmitted. The message is recovered at the receiver by removing the scrambling vector. A table of scrambling vectors is maintained at the transmitters and receivers. The table pointer to select the scrambling vector is selected in response to the position of the message in the communication structure. An OFDM communication system using the above-described method is also provided.

Claims (26)

1. A method comprising:

scrambling data to generate scrambled data using a scrambling vector selected from a predetermined set of scrambling vectors, the scrambling vector being selected based on a position in a communications structure, the position being associated with the data;

modulating the scrambled data to generate modulated data;

mapping the modulated data into orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) tones to generate a signal; and

transmitting the signal based on the scrambled data.

2. A method comprising:

scrambling data to generate scrambled data using a scrambling vector selected from a predetermined set of scrambling vectors, the scrambling vector being selected based on a position in a communications structure, the position being associated with the data; and

transmitting a signal based on the scrambled data,

wherein the communications structure includes a frame and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the position, the position being a slot number in the frame.

3. The method, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the position includes a subchannel of multiple subchannels of the communications structure and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the subchannel.

4. The method, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the position includes a frequency slot of multiple frequency slots of the communications structure and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the frequency slot.

5. The method, as recited in claim 2 , further comprising:

modulating the scrambled data to generate modulated data; and

mapping the modulated data into orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) tones to generate the signal.

6. The method, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on a Network Access Channel and a Broadcast Access Channel of a time division multiple access communications structure.

7. The method, as recited in claim 1 , wherein the scrambling vector is selected according to:

[(NACSlotNum×N 1 )+BCSlot+(FreqSlotNum×N 2 )]modN 3 ,

wherein N 1 is a number of data bearing tones per OFDM frequency slot, N 2 is a number of bits of information per data bearing tone, and N 3 is a number of scrambling vectors in the predetermined set of scrambling vectors.

8. The method, as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

rescrambling the data to generate second scrambled data using a second scrambling vector selected from the predetermined set of scrambling vectors in response to clipping by a power amplifier of a signal based on the scrambled data.

9. A method comprising:

receiving a signal including scrambled data; and

descrambling the scrambled data using a scrambling vector selected from a predetermined set of scrambling vectors, the scrambling vector being selected based on a position in a communications structure, the position being associated with the data,

wherein the communications structure includes a frame and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the position, the position being a slot number in the frame.

10. The method, as recited in claim 9 , wherein the position includes a subchannel of multiple subchannels of the communications structure and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the subchannel.

11. The method, as recited in claim 9 , wherein the position includes a frequency slot of multiple frequency slots of the communications structure and the scrambler is configured to select the scrambling vector based on the frequency slot.
