Abstract

In an example embodiment, a method for focusing a miniature camera includes applying a signal to an actuator in the camera, moving a MEMS stage movably supported by one or more flexures in response to the application of the signal, moving a lens in response to the moving of the MEMS stage, and limiting movement of the MEMS stage to substantially one degree of freedom corresponding to an optical axis of the lens.

Claims (31)

1. A method for focusing a miniature camera, the method comprising:

effecting a current flow through a coil;

moving a magnet in response to the current flow;

moving a MEMS stage in response to the moving of the magnet;

moving a lens in response to the moving of the MEMS stage; and

using a snubber assembly to limit movement of the MEMS stage to substantially one degree of freedom.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coil and the magnet define a Lorentz actuator.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing the current flow through the coil in such a way that the lens moves to a position for focus at infinity.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effecting is done manually by a user of the camera.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the effecting is done automatically by a processor in the camera.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising damping movement of the stage with a liquid.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the liquid comprises an oil.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the miniature camera is incorporated within a cell phone, a personal digital assistant, a computer or a surveillance system.

9. A method for making a photograph, the method comprising;

effecting current flow through a coil;

moving a lens in response to the current flow;

limiting movement of the lens to substantially one degree of freedom along an optical axis of the lens with a snubber assembly; and

focusing an image on an imaging sensor in response to the moving of the lens.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising storing the image focused on the imaging sensor in a memory.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising processing the image focused on the imaging sensor with a processor.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

displaying the image formed by the lens on the imaging sensor on a monitor; and

manually varying the current flow through the coil until the image displayed on the monitor is in focus.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the effecting comprises enabling a processor to control the current flow automatically.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing the current flow through the coil in such a way that the lens moves to a predetermined position relative to the imaging sensor in response to a spring force.

15. A method for operating an electronic device, the method comprising using a controller to control a Lorentz actuator such that a lens which is limited to a single degree of freedom of movement by a snubber assembly focuses an image on an imaging sensor.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising using the controller to store the image focused on the imaging sensor in a memory.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising using the controller to display the image focused on the imaging sensor on a display.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the controller comprises a processor, and further comprising processing the image focused on the imaging sensor with the processor.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising using the snubber assembly to damp vibratory movement of the lens.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the electronic device comprises a camera, a cell phone, a computer or a surveillance system.
