Lactoferrin compositions and methods of wound treatment
The present invention relates to lactoferrin compositions and methods of using the compositions to treat wounds. The compositions can be administered alone or in combination with other standard wound healing therapies.
1. A method of treating a skin wound comprising the step of administering 0.0001 microgram to 100 g per day of lactoferrin to a subject having a skin wound selected from the group consisting of a chronic ulcer, a laceration, a penetrating wound, a surgical wound or an open full thickness skin puncture wound to result in improved wound closure.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lactoferrin is administered topically, orally or parenterally.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lactoferrin is administered topically.
4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the lactoferrin is administered in a gel.
5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lactoferrin is administered orally.
6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising administering an antacid in conjunction with the lactoferrin.
7. The method of claim 2 , wherein the lactoferrin composition is administered parenterally.
8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising administering an additional wound healing therapy in combination with the lactoferrin.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administering comprising administering the lactoferrin for at least one week to twelve weeks.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lactoferrin is comprised in a topical gel, a solution, a capsule or a tablet having a lactoferrin concentration of about 0.0001% to about 30%.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the chronic ulcer is a diabetic ulcer, a venous stasis ulcer, or a pressure ulcer.
