Abstract

A cutter apparatus includes a housing with an opening, a blade carrier coupled to the housing and repositionable in relation to the housing, and an actuator repositionable in relation to the housing and coupled to the blade carrier such that movement of the actuator to an actuator blade deployment position repositions the blade carrier toward the opening and provides mechanical advantage in deploying the blade or maintaining the blade in a deployed position.

Claims (38)

1 . A cutter apparatus comprising:

a housing with an opening;

a blade carrier coupled to the housing and repositionable in relation to the housing; and

an actuator repositionable in relation to the housing and coupled to the blade carrier such that movement of the actuator to an actuator blade deployment position repositions the blade carrier toward the opening and provides mechanical advantage in deploying the blade or maintaining the blade in a deployed position.

2 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blade carrier is repositioned toward the opening along an arcuate path.

3 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the opening is located at a bottom portion of the housing.

4 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is located at a bottom portion of the housing.

5 . The cutter apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the housing includes a handle located at a top portion of the housing.

6 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is pivotally coupled to the housing.

7 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the actuator is substantially flush with a bottom portion of the housing when the actuator is moved to its blade deployment position.

8 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the actuator is within an interior portion of the housing when the actuator is moved to its blade deployment position.

9 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator includes a flapper.

10 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator includes surfaces that are complementary in shape to portions of the housing.

11 . The cutter apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the actuator includes a central portion and side portions that laterally extend from the central portion.

12 . The cutter apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the actuator includes a contact portion that is repositionable toward the housing when the flapper is brought into contact with a workpiece.

13 . The cutter apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the contact portion includes an edge portion that is repositioned adjacent to the opening in the housing when the actuator is moved to its blade deployment position.

14 . The cutter apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the contact portion includes an edge portion repositionable in relation to the housing that faces away from the opening in the housing.

15 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator includes a push post that is repositionable along a linear path in relation to the housing.

16 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a spring configured to urge the actuator to move away from its blade deployment position.

17 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a spring configured to urge a portion of the blade carrier away from the opening.

18 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a channel and the blade carrier and the actuator are configured to simultaneously reposition within the channel as the actuator moves in relation to the housing.

19 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the actuator includes one or more bearings and the blade carrier includes one or more channels along which the one or more bearings slide as the actuator is repositioned in relation to the housing.

20 . The cutter apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the one or more channels are linear.

21 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the blade carrier and the actuator are mechanically coupled such that a portion of the actuator bears against a surface of the blade carrier at an angle of incidence that increases as the actuator is moved toward its blade deployment position.

22 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a linkage member mechanically coupled to the blade carrier, the linkage member including one or more portions configured to receive one or more complementary portions of the blade carrier about which adjacent portions of the blade carrier pivot as the actuator is moved toward its blade deployment position.

23 . The cutter apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the one or more portions of the linkage member are shaped to permit movement of the blade carrier toward a distal end of the cutter in response to a cutting edge of the blade coming into contact with a workpiece.

24 . The cutter apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the linkage member is repositionable within the housing for changing a blade depth that the blade is extended from the housing when the actuator is moved to its blade deployment position.

25 . The cutter apparatus of claim 24 , further comprising:

a blade depth selector configured to allow a user of the cutter apparatus to select the blade depth by repositioning the linkage member.

26 . The cutter apparatus of claim 25 , further comprising:

a spring operatively connected between the blade depth selector and the blade carrier.

27 . The cutter apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a pair of cut guards coupled to the housing at opposite sides of opening, the cut guards being repositionable in relation to the housing and independently extendable therefrom.

28 . The cutter apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the actuator includes surfaces that are complementary in shape to portions of the cut guards.

29 . The cutter apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the actuator includes a portion that repositions between the cut guards when the actuator is moved to its blade deployment position.
