Abstract

In general, techniques are described in which a plurality of network switches automatically configure themselves to operate as a single virtual network switch. A virtual switch is a collection of individual switch devices that operate like as single network switch. As described herein, network switches in a network that are capable of participating in a virtual switch may automatically discover one another. The participating network switches may then elect one of the participating switches as a master switch. The master switch may generate forwarding information and store the forwarding information in the participating switches, including the master switch. The forwarding information causes the participating switches to act like a single network switch.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, with a first layer two (L2) network switch, a link-layer data unit from a second L2 network switch, wherein the link-layer data unit include a parameter indicating whether the second switch is capable of participating as part of a virtual network switch; and

operating the first L2 network switch and the second L2 network switch as the virtual network switch as if the first L2 network switch and second L2 network switch were located within a single physical chassis.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

electing the first L2 network switch as a master switch for the virtual L2 network switch;

creating, with the first L2 network switch, forwarding information for the second L2 network switch participating in the virtual network switch; and

outputting the forwarding information from the first L2 network switch to the second L2 network switch to control forwarding of L2 network communications by the second L2 network switch.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

enabling a layer three (L3) routing module on the first L2 network switch upon electing the first L2 network switch as the master switch;

outputting the forwarding information from the first L2 network switch to the second L2 network switch via the L3 routing module.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising disabling a layer three (L3) routing module on the second L2 network switch upon electing the first L2 network switch as the master network switch for the virtual network switch.

5. The method of claim 3 , further comprising operating the second L2 network switch as virtual interface cards controlled by the L3 routing component of the first L2 network switch operating as the master switch.

6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving configuration data of a management information base (MIB) of the second L2 network switch;

determining qualifications of the second L2 network switch based on the received configuration data; and

selecting the first L2 network switch as the master switch based on the determined qualifications.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein receiving the configuration data of the MIB of the second L2 network switch comprises receiving link state advertisement message from the L2 network switch.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the link-state advertisement message comprise an intermediate system-intermediate system (IS-IS) routing protocol message.

9. The method of claim 2 , further comprising automatically operating the second L2 network switch as the master switch for the virtual switch in the event that the first L2 network switch fails.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first L2 network switch receives the link-layer data unit from the second L2 network switch by a standard network interface coupling the first L2 network switch to an L2 network.

11. A network switch comprising:

a plurality of network interfaces that communicate layer two (L2) network communications within an L2 network;

a forwarding unit to switch the network frames between the network interfaces; and

a control unit that receives link-layer data units from a set of network switches via the L2 network,

wherein the link-layer data units include parameters indicating that the set of switches are capable of participating as part of a virtual network switch, and

wherein, in response to the link-layer data units, the control unit operates the network switch and the set of network switches as a virtual network switch as if the network switch and the set of network switches were located within a single physical chassis.

12. The network switch of claim 11 , further comprising:

a master election software module executing on the control unit that identifies the first network switch as a master switch for the virtual L2 network switch,

wherein the control unit creates forwarding information for the set of network switches participating in the virtual network switch and outputs the forwarding information to the set of network switches.

13. The network switch of claim 12 , further comprising a layer three (L3) routing module executing on the control unit,

wherein the control unit enables the L3 routing module upon electing the L2 network switch as the master switch, and

wherein the routing module outputs the forwarding information to the set of network switch.

14. The network switch of claim 11 , further comprising:

wherein the routing modules receiving routing protocol messages that include configuration data of a management information base (MIB) of the set of network switches, and

wherein the master election module determines qualifications of the set of network switches based on the received configuration data and selects the first L2 network switch as the master switch based on the determined qualifications.

15. The network switch of claim 14 , wherein the routing protocol messages comprise link state advertisement message.

16. The network switch of claim 15 , wherein the link-state advertisement messages comprise intermediate system-intermediate system (IS-IS) routing protocol messages.

17. A method comprising:

electing a first layer two (L2) network switch as a master switch for a virtual L2 network switch;

enabling a layer three (L3) routing module on the first L2 network switch upon electing the first L2 network switch as the master switch;

creating, with the first L2 network switch, forwarding information for a second L2 network switch participating in the virtual network switch; and

outputting the forwarding information from the first L2 network switch to the second L2 network switch via the L3 routing module to control forwarding of L2 network communications by the second L2 network switch.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising disabling a layer three (L3) routing module on the second L2 network switch upon electing the first L2 network switch as the master network switch for the virtual network switch.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising operating the second L2 network switch as a set of virtual interface cards controlled by the L3 routing component of the first L2 network switch operating as the master switch.

20. A method comprising:

receiving, with a first layer two (L2) network switch, a communication from a second L2 network switch, wherein the communication includes a parameter indicating whether the second switch is capable of participating as part of a virtual network switch; and

in response to the communication, configuring the first L2 network switch and the second L2 network switch as a stacked set of switches operating as a single logical network switch.
