Screw locking mechanism and method
View Patent ↗This invention relates to a bony fixation system and method for use as a prosthetic implant. The system and method includes a plate dimensioned to be situated between adjacent bony structures, such as adjacent vertebrae. Screws are provided in one embodiment and are dimensioned or configured to be inserted into a bony structure and to lock against each other to retain the screws and consequently secure the plate in place against the bony structure.
1. A locking system for retaining a prosthetic implant to vertebrae comprising:
a first bone screw for retaining and securing said prosthetic implant on to a vertebra; and
at least one second bone screw for securing said prosthetic implant to another of said vertebrae, said first bone screw and said at least one second bone screw each having a head and being adapted to be screwed into bone;
said at least one second bone screw engages said first bone screw to retain at least one of said first bone screw or said at least one second bone screw in a tightened position;
wherein said first bone screw comprises a head having a first wall portion having a first radius and a second wall portion having a second radius that is larger than said first radius;
said first wall portion being adapted to permit said at least one second bone screw to rotate when said at least one second bone screw is screwed into bone and said second wall portion being adapted to engage said head of said at least one second bone screw upon rotation of said first bone screw, thereby locking said head of said first bone screw to said head of said at least one second bone screw;
wherein said first bone screw has a shank with a threaded portion having a threaded axis, said head of said bone screw having a head center that is offset from said threaded axis to provide an eccentric head portion.
2. The locking system as recited in claim 1 wherein said second wall portion of said first bone screw comprises a large radius of curvature providing a flat surface.
3. The locking system as recited in claim 2 wherein said at least one second bone screw comprises an indicia to identify said flat surface.
4. The locking system as recited in claim 1 wherein said head of each of said first bone screw and said at least one second bone screw have a wall that has a planar or flat portion.
5. The locking system as recited in claim 1 wherein said first bone screw and said at least one second bone screw each comprise a large radius of curvature that defines a flat surface.
6. The locking system as recited in claim 1 wherein said eccentric head has a small radius portion defining said first portion comprising a large radius of curvature providing a flat surface.
7. The locking system as recited in claim 1 wherein said at least one second bone screw has a threaded portion having a second thread axis, said head of said at least one second bone screw having a head center that is offset from said second thread axis to provide or define an eccentric head.
