Abstract

An electrophoretic display device includes a display element including a pair of first and second substrates which are opposed to each other, and a microcapsule enclosing a display material changed in optical characteristics in response to an electric impulse, the microcapsule being sandwiched between the first and second substrates; and a protective film sealing the display element. In the display device, a first electrode is provided on the surface of the first substrate which faces the second substrate, a second electrode is provided on the surface of the second substrate which faces the first substrate, and a spacer is provided in the space between the periphery of the facing surface of the first substrate and the first electrode.

Claims (15)

1. An electrophoretic display device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

an electrophoretic layer including a plurality of microcapsules, each microcapsule having a plurality of electrophoretic particles and a dispersion medium, the electrophoretic layer being between the first and second substrates;

a group of first electrodes provided between the first substrate and the electrophoretic layer;

a dummy pattern provided outside of the group of first electrodes;

a second electrode provided between the second substrate and the electrophoretic layer, the second electrode being opposed to the group of first electrodes and the dummy pattern; and

a terminal provided outside of the dummy pattern, the second electrode being electrically connected to the terminal.

2. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the dummy pattern is in a range of 50% to 150% of a thickness of one of the group of first electrodes.

3. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein a width of the dummy pattern is 3 mm or less.

4. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , wherein the dummy pattern is composed of the same material as that of the group of first electrodes.

5. The electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a conductive portion provided between the electrophoretic layer and the first substrate; and

a conductive material provided between the conductive portion and the second electrode, the conductive material conductively connecting the conductive portion to the second electrode.

6. An electronic apparatus comprising the electrophoretic display device according to claim 1 .
