Abstract

Network information may be discoverable without requiring a connection to that network. For example, Access Network Query Protocol (“ANQP”) may allow a device to discover information about a network prior to the device associating with that network. In other words, ANQP allows a network terminal to request additional network information prior to establishing network capability. The additional network information that may be discoverable includes network latency, cellular capabilities, hotspot capabilities, mobility capabilities, neighbor reports, station identification, and multiple hotspot session identification.

Claims (61)

1 . A method for network discovery comprising:

transmitting, prior to network association, a request to a wireless access point for cellular network capabilities of a wireless network provided at the wireless access point; and

receiving, prior to network association, a response from the wireless access point that comprises the cellular network capabilities of the wireless network.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cellular network capabilities comprises Third Generation Partnership Project (“3GPP”) capabilities and includes at least one of Access Network Discovery and Selection Function support, Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (“IMS”) support, or Generic Access Network support.

3 . The method of claim 2 further comprising:

comparing the 3GPP capabilities during network discovery for the wireless access point with other 3GPP capabilities for another wireless access point; and

selecting which wireless access point to associate with based on the comparison of the 3GPP capabilities.

4 . The method of claim 1 wherein the request and the response comprise access network query protocol messages.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the request and the response are transmitted at a media access control layer without providing access to an internet protocol layer.

6 . A device comprising:

a processor configured to:

transmit, prior to network association, a request to an access point for cellular network capabilities of a wireless network provided at the access point; and

receive, prior to network association, a response from the access point that comprises the cellular network capabilities of the wireless network provided at the access point.

7 . The device of claim 6 wherein the cellular network capabilities comprises Third Generation Partnership Project (“3GPP”) capabilities and includes at least one of Access Network Discovery and Selection Function support, Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (“IMS”) support, or Generic Access Network support.

8 . The device of claim 7 further comprising:

comparing the 3GPP capabilities during network discovery for the access point with other 3GPP capabilities for another access point; and

selecting which access point to associate with based on the comparison of the 3GPP capabilities.

9 . The device of claim 6 wherein the request and the response comprise access network query protocol messages.

10 . A method for receiving information about a network comprising:

transmitting an access network query protocol (“ANQP”) request to a access point about mobility capabilities of the network provided by the access point, wherein the mobility capabilities comprise which handover protocols are supported by the network; and

receiving an ANQP response from the access point that comprises the mobility capabilities of the network provided by the access point.

11 . The method of claim 10 wherein the ANQP request and ANQP response are sent prior to network association.

12 . The method of claim 10 wherein the network comprises a wireless local area network from the access point.

13 . The method of claim 10 further comprising:

comparing the mobility capabilities during network discovery for the network access point with mobility capabilities from another network access point; and

selecting which network access point to associate with based on the comparison of the mobility capabilities.

14 . A device comprising:

a processor configured to:

transmit, prior to network association, a request to a wireless network for mobility capabilities of the wireless network, wherein the mobility capabilities comprise which handover protocols are supported by the wireless network; and

receive, prior to network association, a response from the wireless network that comprises the mobility capabilities of the wireless network.

15 . The device of claim 14 wherein the request and the response comprise access network query protocol messages.

16 . The device of claim 14 further comprising:

comparing the mobility capabilities during network discovery for the wireless network with mobility capabilities from another wireless network; and

selecting which wireless network to associate with based on the comparison of the mobility capabilities.

17 . A method for wireless network communications comprising:

providing, prior to network association, a request from a first station to a second station over a wireless network requesting an identification type of the second station; and

receiving, prior to network association, a response to the request over the wireless network, wherein the response comprises the identification type of the second station.

18 . The method of claim 17 wherein the first station comprises a wireless terminal and the second station comprises an access point, further wherein the identification type identifies a type of the access point.

19 . The method of claim 18 wherein the identification information comprises a type of access point and features for the access point.

20 . The method of claim 17 wherein the first station comprises an access point and the second station comprises a wireless terminal, further wherein the identification type identifies a type of the wireless terminal.

21 . The method of claim 17 wherein the request and the response comprise access network query protocol (“ANQP”) messages.

22 . The method of claim 17 wherein the request and response are transmitted at a media access control layer without providing access to an internet protocol layer.

23 . A device comprising:

a processor configured to:

provide an access network query protocol (“ANQP”) request from a first station to a second station requesting an identification type of the second station; and

receive an ANQP response to the ANQP request at the first station, wherein the ANQP response comprises the identification type of the second station.

24 . The device of claim 23 wherein the first station comprises a wireless terminal and the second station comprises an access point, further wherein the identification type identifies a type of the access point.

25 . The device of claim 24 wherein the identification information comprises a type of access point and features for the access point.

26 . The device of claim 23 wherein the first station comprises an access point and the second station comprises a wireless terminal, further wherein the identification type identifies a type of the wireless terminal.
