Abstract

The present invention provides for a method for reserving spare bandwidth for a link in a communication network including a plurality of links. The method provides for monitoring the volume of traffic routed through each link of the communication network. A single link failure for each link is then simulated and the volume of traffic which would be rerouted through each link for maintaining communication and the volume of traffic removed from each link are determined for each simulated single link failure. The difference between the volume of traffic which would need to be rerouted through each link and the corresponding volume of traffic removed from each link is then computed, and a maximum difference value is determined for each link for all simulated single link failures. An amount of spare bandwidth equivalent to the determined maximum difference is then reserved for each link.

Claims (27)

1. A connection control method for a communication system, the method comprising:

in a communication system with preexisting working traffic, evaluating bandwidth required for a proposed connection to the system in addition to the preexisting working traffic by evaluating at least the bandwidth required for the preexisting working traffic by iteratively testing each connection according to shortest and longest paths and choosing the path yielding a reduced working bandwidth;

accepting the proposed connection only in the presence of adequate excess capacity to support same in the at least one failure situation.

2. A method as in claim 1 which includes implementing a state table which is updated to represent the required bandwidth under at least some failure scenarios.

3. A method as in claim 1 wherein the communication system comprises a ring-type communication system.

4. A method as in claim 3 which includes adjusting bandwidth requirements when a connection is dropped.

5. A method as in claim 4 which includes conducting the evaluating on a distributed basis.

6. A communication system comprising:

a working path and a protection path;

at least one node coupled to the paths;

apparatus for accepting a proposed connection only in the presence of adequate bandwidth notwithstanding at least one failure on one of the paths, the apparatus determines the presence of adequate excess bandwidth by evaluating a bandwidth for the preexisting working and protection traffic by simulating the routing of all connections according to a shortest path and then a longest path and choosing a path yielding a relatively minimum value of maximum bandwidth link.

7. A system as in claim 6 where the apparatus comprises, at least in part, an add drop multiplexer at the at least one node.

8. A system as in claim 6 which includes a plurality of nodes each of which contains an add drop multiplexer where the apparatus is distributed there among.

9. A system as in claim 6 which includes communication related data used by the apparatus for accepting the proposed connection in determining if the proposed connection should be accepted.

10. A system as in claim 6 where the at least one node further comprises a node of an optical communication system.

11. A system as in claim 6 further comprising a state table usable to represent required bandwidth.

12. A device for a communication system comprising:

at least a first pair of ports for ingress and egress of communications signals from respective links in the system; and

a connection evaluator coupled to the ports which, at least in part, evaluates bandwidth requirements, if a requested connection is accepted, or if a link fails, wherein the connection evaluator determines the presence of adequate bandwidth by evaluating a bandwidth for at least preexisting working traffic by simulating the routing of all connections according to a shortest path and then a longest path and choosing a path yielding a relatively minimum value of maximum bandwidth.

13. A device as in claim 12 which includes add/drop processing structures, coupled to the ports, for at least adding communications associated with the links.

14. A device as in claim 13 which includes first and second pairs of ports coupled to the processing structures for bi-directional communications.

15. A device as in claim 12 which includes communications related data used by the evaluator in determining if a requested connection should be accepted.

16. A device as in claim 12 which includes a plurality of displaced processing structures and connection evaluators where at least some of the processing structures include add drop multiplexers.

17. A device as in claim 16 where the displaced processing structures are linked, via ports and communications links, the links at least during selected time intervals carry substantially duplicate communications information routed in opposite directions.

18. A device as in claim 16 were the displaced processing structures each comprise a four port node of an optical communications system.

19. A device as in claim 12 where the processing structures comprise a node of an optical communication system.

20. A device as in claim 12 which includes a state table usable to represent required bandwidth.
