Abstract

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for identifying and handling group gifts. A system practicing the method receives a request to establish a policy governing a money transfer from a giver account to a recipient payment account according to a policy established at least in part on a communication context, wherein the policy indicates that, upon detection of a qualifying transaction made with a recipient payment account, a transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account. The system analyzes the communication context to determine the giver and the recipient and respective payment accounts. Then the system implements the policy governing the money transfer such that, upon detection of the qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, at least a portion of the transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account from the respective payment account for the giver.

Claims (42)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving a request to establish a policy governing a money transfer from a giver having a giver payment account to a recipient having a recipient payment account, wherein:

the giver payment account and the recipient payment account both existed prior to the request;

the policy is based at least in part on a communication context; and

the policy indicates that, upon detection of a qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, a transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account;

analyzing the communication context to determine the giver and the recipient; and

implementing the policy governing the money transfer such that, upon detection of the qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, at least a portion of the transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account from the giver payment account.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication context is based on at least one of a conference call, a video conference, an instant messaging session, and an email history.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the giver payment account and recipient payment account are identified based on profiles registered with a communication provider associated with the communication context.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication context is inferred based on the request.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the request includes at least part of the communication context.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the group of persons is a subset of all persons associated with the communication context.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication context comprises a context stream, the method further comprising:

determining the group of persons in substantially real-time based on the context stream.

8 . A system comprising:

a processor;

a memory storing instructions for controlling the processor to perform steps comprising:

receiving a request to establish a policy governing a money transfer from a giver having a giver payment account to a recipient having a recipient payment account, wherein:

the giver payment account and the recipient payment account both existed prior to the request;

the policy is based at least in part on a communication context; and

the policy indicates that, upon detection of a qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, a transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account;

analyzing the communication context to determine the giver and the recipient; and

implementing the policy governing the money transfer such that, upon detection of the qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, at least a portion of the transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account from the giver payment account

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the communication context is based on at least one of a conference call, a video conference, an instant messaging session, and an email history.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the giver payment account and the recipient payment account are identified based on profiles registered with a communication provider associated with the communication context.

11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the communication context is inferred based on the request.

12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the request includes at least part of the communication context.

13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the group of persons is a subset of all persons associated with the communication context.

14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the communication context comprises a context stream, the method further comprising:

determining the group of persons in substantially real-time based on the context stream.

15 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform steps comprising:

receiving a request to establish a policy governing a money transfer from a giver having a giver payment account to a recipient having a recipient payment account, wherein:

the giver payment account and the recipient payment account both existed prior to the request;

the policy is based at least in part on a communication context; and

the policy indicates that, upon detection of a qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, a transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account;

analyzing the communication context to determine the giver and the recipient; and

implementing the policy governing the money transfer such that, upon detection of the qualifying transaction made with the recipient payment account, at least a portion of the transfer amount is applied to the recipient payment account from the giver payment account

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the communication context is based on at least one of a conference call, a video conference, an instant messaging session, and an email history.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the giver payment account is identified based on a profile registered with a communication provider associated with the communication context.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the communication context is inferred based on the request.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the request includes at least part of the communication context.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the giver and the recipient associated with the recipient payment account are participants in the communication context.
