Abstract

A variety of forms of machine-readable symbols are disclosed, as well as methods and systems of constructing machine-readable symbols, methods and systems of acquiring machine-readable symbols, and methods and systems of decoding machine-readable symbols.

Claims (29)

1. A method of acquiring an image of a machine-readable symbol, the method comprising:

illuminating the machine-readable symbol with a plurality of illumination sources having different illumination spectra;

collecting an image of the illuminated machine-readable symbol;

separating chromatic components of the collect image to generate a plurality of raw images, each raw image of the plurality of raw images corresponding to a respective separated chromatic component of the collect image; and

combining information from each raw image of the plurality of raw images to generate a new single image of the machine-readable symbol.

2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the machine-readable symbol comprises a printed barcode.

3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein the plurality of illumination sources are disposed relative to the machine-readable symbol to provide a plurality of distinct illumination geometries.

4. The method recited in claim 3 wherein at least two of the plurality of illumination sources are disposed at different azimuthal angles relative to the machine-readable symbol.

5. The method recited in claim 3 wherein at least two of the plurality of illumination sources are disposed at different elevation angles relative to the machine-readable symbol.

6. The method recited in claim 1 wherein illumination from at least one of the illumination sources is polarized, the method further comprising separating polarization components of the collected image.

7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein at least one of the illumination sources provides diffuse illumination.

8. The method recited in claim 1 wherein at least one of the illumination sources provides substantially directional illumination.

9. The method recited in claim 1 wherein at least two of the illumination sources provide light having a plurality of illumination wavelengths, the two of the illumination sources providing the plurality of illumination wavelengths at different relative intensities.

10. The method recited in claim 1 wherein each illumination source provides light that is substantially monochromatic.

11. A system for acquiring an image of a machine-readable symbol, the system comprising:

a plurality of illumination sources having different illumination spectra and disposed to illuminate the machine-readable symbol;

an imager disposed to collect an image of the illuminated machine-readable symbol; and

a computational unit interfaced with the imager, the computational unit having instructions to separate chromatic components of the collected image for generation of a plurality of raw images, each raw image of the plurality of raw images corresponding to a respective separated chromatic component of the collected image, and wherein the computational unit further having instructions to combine information from each raw image of the plurality of raw images to generate a new single image of the machine-readable symbol.

12. The system recited in claim 11 wherein the machine-readable symbol comprises a printed barcode.

13. The system recited in claim 11 wherein the plurality of illumination sources are disposed relative to the machine-readable symbol to provide a plurality of distinct illumination geometries.

14. The system recited in claim 13 wherein at least two of the plurality of illumination sources are disposed at different azimuthal angles relative to the machine-readable symbol.

15. The system recited in claim 13 wherein at least two of the plurality of illumination sources are disposed at different elevation angles relative to the machine-readable symbol.

16. The system recited in claim 11 wherein:

illumination from at least one of the illumination sources is polarized; and

the computational further includes instructions to separate polarization components of the collected image.

17. The system recited in claim 11 wherein at least one of the illumination sources provides diffuse illumination.

18. The system recited in claim 11 wherein at least one of the illumination sources provides substantially directional illumination.

19. The system recited in claim 11 wherein at least two of the illumination sources provide light having a plurality of illumination wavelengths, the two of the illumination sources providing the plurality of illumination wavelengths at different relative intensities.

20. The system recited in claim 11 wherein each illumination sources provides light that is substantially monochromatic.
