Abstract

A medical device includes a handle assembly and a probe-and-amplifier assembly. The handle assembly includes a handle body defining a chamber therein. The probe-and-amplifier assembly includes a probe and a microwave amplifier unit. The probe extends distally from the distal end of the handle assembly. The microwave amplifier unit is disposed within the chamber. The microwave amplifier unit and the probe are mechanically coupled to one another to form a unitary body. The probe-and-amplifier assembly is selectively removable from the handle assembly.

Claims (32)

1. A medical device, comprising:

a handle assembly including a handle body defining a chamber therein and a first plurality of electrical contacts disposed thereon; and

a probe-and-amplifier assembly, including:

a probe extending distally from a distal end of the handle assembly;

a microwave amplifier unit disposed within the chamber, wherein the microwave amplifier unit and the probe are mechanically coupled to one another to form a unitary body; and

a second plurality of electrical contacts coupled to the microwave amplifier unit being selectively engageable with the first plurality of electrical contacts of the handle assembly,

wherein the probe-and-amplifier assembly is selectively removable from the handle assembly.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the probe is releaseably mechanically coupled to the microwave amplifier unit to allow the probe to be separated from the amplifier.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the microwave amplifier unit is adapted to amplify a high-frequency input signal to generate a high-frequency output signal to be transmitted to the probe.

4. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the microwave amplifier unit includes a solid-state amplifier having at least one high-frequency switching element.

5. The medical device of claim 4 , wherein the at least one high-frequency switching element includes at least one Gallium Nitride Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (GaN MOSFET).

6. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a controller electrically-coupled to the microwave amplifier unit and adapted to control at least one operating parameter associated with the microwave amplifier unit.

7. The medical device of claim 6 , further comprising a user interface including a screen associated with the handle body, the screen communicatively-coupled to the controller.

8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the controller is adapted to control the at least one operating parameter associated with the microwave amplifier unit based on at least one electrical signal indicative of a user input received from the user interface.

9. The medical device of claim 6 , further comprising a self-contained power source electrically-coupled to the microwave amplifier unit and communicatively-coupled to the controller.

10. The medical device of claim 9 , wherein the self-contained power source is communicatively-coupled to the controller.

11. The medical device of claim 9 , wherein the self-contained power source is selectively removable from the handle assembly.

12. A system, comprising:

a microwave signal generator; and

a medical device, including:

a handle assembly including a handle body defining a chamber therein and a first plurality of electrical contacts disposed thereon; and

a probe-and-amplifier assembly, including:

a probe extending distally from a distal end of the handle assembly;

a microwave amplifier unit disposed within the chamber, wherein the microwave amplifier unit and the probe are mechanically coupled to one another to form a unitary body; and

a second plurality of electrical contacts coupled to the microwave amplifier unit being selectively engageable with the first plurality of electrical contacts of the handle assembly,

wherein the probe-and-amplifier assembly is selectively removable from the handle assembly.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a controller electrically-coupled to the microwave amplifier unit and adapted to control at least one operating parameter associated with the microwave amplifier unit.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the medical device further includes a user interface including a screen associated with the handle body, the screen communicatively-coupled to the controller.

15. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a controller adapted to control at least one operating parameter associated with at least one of the microwave signal generator and the microwave amplifier unit based on at least one electrical signal indicative of a user input received from the user interface.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the medical device further includes a self-contained power source electrically-coupled to the microwave amplifier unit.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the self-contained power source is communicatively-coupled to the controller.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the self-contained power source is selectively removable from the handle assembly.
