Abstract

A system and method are provided for displaying a data series. In one embodiment, a graphical interface is provided including at least one axis that is divided into a plurality of axis regions. Preferably, each axis region uses a different linear scale, and the plurality of axis regions forms a continuous non-linear scale. The graphical interface also displays the data series in relation to the plurality of axis regions, and the data series is plotted in relation to each axis region based on a scale resolution corresponding to each respective axis region.

Claims (36)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein instructions for causing a processor to carry out acts comprising:

generating, via a computing device having a processor, a time axis having a plurality of regions, where a recent data region of the plurality of regions comprises a linear scale different than an older data region of the plurality of regions, where the plurality of regions form a continuous non-linear scale;

displaying, via the computing device, a chart axis relative to the time axis; and

displaying, via the computing device, at least one data series relative to the time axis and the chart axis where in response to receiving new data, at least a portion of data displayed in the recent data region of the plurality of regions is moved from the recent data region to the older data region of the plurality of regions.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where the acts further comprise displaying an icon relative to the recent data region, where the icon is configured for sizing the recent data region.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 2 where the icon is movable relative to at least one of the recent data region and the older data region.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 2 where the icon is movable in response to a predetermined event.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 4 where the predetermined event is based on any of at least one of the plurality of regions, a user-defined event and combinations thereof.

6. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , where the acts further comprise providing via the computing device at least one icon configured to select a number of the plurality of regions.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where a number of the plurality of regions is user selectable.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where each linear scale comprises a linear time scale, and where the data series comprises a time data series.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where the plurality of regions comprises at least two of the following: a year-based time scale, a quarter-based time scale, a month-based time scale, a week-based time scale, a day-based time scale, an hour-based time scale, a minute-based time scale, and a second-based time scale.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where a scale resolution for at least one of the plurality of regions is user-customizable.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 where the at least one data series is for a tradeable object being traded at an electronic exchange, and where the at least one data series is dynamically updated according to market updates from the electronic exchange.

12. A method for displaying a data series, comprising:

generating, via a computing device having a processor, a time axis having a plurality of regions, where a recent data region of the plurality of regions comprises a linear scale different than an older data region of the plurality of regions, where the plurality of regions form a continuous non-linear scale;

displaying, via the computing device, a chart axis relative to the time axis; and

displaying, via the computing device, at least one data series relative to the time axis and the chart axis where in response to receiving new data, at least a portion of data displayed in the recent data region of the plurality of regions is moved from the recent data region to the older data region of the plurality of regions.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising displaying via the computing device an icon relative to the recent data region, where the icon is configured for sizing the recent data region.

14. The method of claim 13 where the icon is movable relative to at least one of the recent data region and the older data region.

15. The method of claim 13 where the icon is movable in response to a predetermined event.

16. The method of claim 15 where the predetermined event is based on any of at least one of the plurality of regions, a user-defined event and combinations thereof.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing via the computing device at least one icon configured to select a number of the plurality of regions.

18. The method of claim 12 where a number of the plurality of regions is user selectable.

19. The method of claim 12 where each linear scale comprises a linear time scale, and where the data series comprises a time data series.

20. The method of claim 12 where the plurality of regions comprises at least two of the following: a year-based time scale, a quarter-based time scale, a month-based time scale, a week-based time scale, a day-based time scale, an hour-based time scale, a minute-based time scale, and a second-based time scale.

21. The method of claim 12 where a scale resolution for at least one of the plurality of regions is user-customizable.

22. The method of claim 12 where the at least one data series is for a tradeable object being traded at an electronic exchange, and where the at least one data series is dynamically updated according to market updates from the electronic exchange.

23. A trading system for displaying a data series, comprising:

a processor; and

a display coupled with the processor and configured to display:

a time axis having a plurality of regions, where a recent data region comprises a different linear scale than an older data region, the plurality of regions forming a continuous non-linear scale,

a chart axis relative to the time axis,

a data series plotted relative to the time axis and the chart axis, and

at least one data series relative to the time axis and the chart axis,

where in response to receiving new data, at least a portion of data displayed in the recent data region of the plurality of regions is moved from the recent data region to the older data region of the plurality of regions.
