Abstract

The present invention regards an apparatus for selectively and accurately deploying one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances from a portable medical device. The apparatus includes a body having a channel, a string passing through the channel, and a mechanism for moving the string predetermined distances to deploy medical appliances. The medical appliances may be, but are not limited to, ligation bands.

Claims (26)

1. A method for selectively deploying one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances from a portable medical device at a target site, comprising the steps of:

inserting the proximal end of a string into an opening in a hollow shaft, the shaft having an outside surface, an inside surface, a proximal end, and a distal end;

securing the proximal end of the string to an external slidable handle, the handle slidably coupled to the outside surface of the shaft, the distal end of the string in communication with the one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances;

deploying the one of the one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances by sliding the handle until it reaches a first stop; and

moving the first stop from a first position to a second position to allow the handle to be moved proximally along the shaft and over the first stop.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein in the first position the first stop protrudes upwardly from the shaft to preclude proximal movement of the handle along the shaft.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein in the second position the first stop is depressed to allow the handle to be moved proximally along the shaft and over the first stop.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first stop is compressible from a first position to a second position, the second position allowing the handle to slide over the first stop.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first stop protrudes from the outside surface of the shaft.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sliding the handle proximally along the shaft to reach a second stop.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second stop is positioned on the outside surface of the shaft to preclude proximal movement of the handle along the shaft.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second stop is fixed.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second stop is compressible from a first position to a second position, the second position allowing the handle to slide over the second stop.

10. The method of claim 6 , further comprising a third stop positioned on the outside surface of the shaft to prevent movement of the handle along the shaft beyond the third stop.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the distance between the first stop and the second stop along the shaft being equal to the distance between the second stop and the third stop along the shaft.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one of the one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances are ligation bands.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising securing a looped end of the string to a slot located on the handle.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sliding the handle incrementally so that the string is moved a corresponding incremental distance.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handle is curved and is scored to receive the string.

16. A method for selectively deploying one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances from a portable medical device at a target site, comprising the steps of:

inserting the proximal end of a string into an opening in a hollow shaft, the shaft having an outside surface, an inside surface, a proximal end, and a distal end;

securing the proximal end of the string to an external slidable handle, the handle slidably coupled to the outside surface of the shaft, the distal end of the string in communication with the one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances;

deploying the one of the one or more sequentially positioned medical appliances by sliding the handle until it reaches a first stop; and

moving the first stop from a first position in which the first stop protrudes upwardly from the shaft to preclude proximal movement of the handle along the shaft to a second position in which the first stop is depressed to allow the handle to be moved proximally along the shaft and over the first stop.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising sliding the handle proximally along the shaft to reach a second stop.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the second stop is positioned on the outside surface of the shaft to preclude proximal movement of the handle along the shaft.
