Abstract

An apparatus and method providing for detecting and responding to high voltage electrolysis within an electric vehicle battery enclosure to limit possible excessive thermal condition of the individual battery cells and modules. A microprocessor-implemented response system for high voltage electrolysis in a battery pack an evaluator to monitor, using the microprocessor, a high voltage electrolysis flag indicative of a possible high voltage electrolysis within an enclosure including a plurality of electrically-coupled battery modules storing energy for the battery pack and a coolant distribution system disposed among and electrically isolated from the plurality of battery modules; and a remediation system, coupled to the enclosure and responsive to the possible high voltage electrolysis when the evaluator detects a likelihood of the possible high voltage electrolysis, to decrease risks associated with the possible high voltage electrolysis when operated.

Claims (14)

1. A microprocessor-implemented response system for high voltage electrolysis in a battery pack, comprising:

an evaluator arranged and configured to monitor, using the microprocessor, a high voltage electrolysis flag indicative of a possible high voltage electrolysis within an enclosure including a plurality of electrically-coupled battery modules storing energy for the battery pack and a coolant distribution system disposed among and electrically isolated from said plurality of battery modules, wherein said coolant distribution system uses a coolant solution having a mixture of a first liquid and a second liquid in a predetermined ratio to produce a first boiling point for said coolant solution, wherein boiling of said coolant solution changes said predetermined ratio to produce a second boiling point for said coolant solution higher than said first boiling point and wherein said second boiling point is about equal to a temperature sufficient to induce a thermal runaway condition for one or more battery modules of said plurality of battery modules;

wherein said high voltage electrolysis flag reflects an evaluation against a predetermined pattern that includes a sustained rise in temperature of the battery pack to within a predetermined range of the first boiling point; and

a remediation system, coupled to said enclosure and responsive to said possible high voltage electrolysis when said evaluator detects a likelihood of said possible high voltage electrolysis, to decrease risks associated with said possible high voltage electrolysis when operated.

2. The response system of claim 1 wherein each said battery module includes a plurality of series-connected energy storage elements, wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis is responsive to energy from an internal short-circuit between a set of elements from said plurality of series-connected energy storage elements, and wherein said remediation system includes one or more overcurrent protection devices disposed in series with said set of elements with at least one of said overcurrent protection devices opening said short-circuit responsive to an operation of said remediation system.

3. The response system of claim 1 wherein one or more coolant pumps distribute said coolant solution through said coolant distribution systems, wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis includes electrolysis of said coolant solution disposed inside said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system, and wherein said remediation system includes enhanced activation of said one or more coolant pumps above a baseline level to add additional coolant solution into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system responsive to an operation of said remediation system.

4. The response system of claim 1 wherein boiling of said coolant solution changes said predetermined ratio to produce the second boiling point for said coolant solution higher than said first boiling point by boiling more of said first liquid than said second liquid, and wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis includes electrolysis of said coolant solution disposed inside said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system, and wherein said remediation system includes a port coupled to said enclosure and independent of said coolant distribution system to permit addition of a remediation liquid into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system and wherein said remediation system couples said port to a reservoir of said first liquid and dispenses a large quantity of said first liquid into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system responsive to an operation of said remediation system.

5. A method for responding to a high voltage electrolysis in a battery pack, the method comprising the steps of:

a) monitoring, using a microprocessor, a high voltage electrolysis flag indicative of a possible high voltage electrolysis within an enclosure including both a plurality of electrically-coupled battery modules storing energy for the battery pack and a coolant distribution system disposed among and electrically isolated from said plurality of battery modules, wherein said coolant distribution system uses a coolant solution having a mixture of a first liquid and a second liquid in a predetermined ratio to produce a first boiling point for said coolant solution, wherein boiling of said coolant solution changes said predetermined ratio to produce a second boiling point for said coolant solution higher than said first boiling point and wherein said second boiling point is about equal to a temperature sufficient to induce a thermal runaway condition for one or more battery modules of said plurality of battery modules;

wherein said high voltage electrolysis flag reflects an evaluation against a predetermined pattern that includes a sustained rise in temperature of the battery pack to within a predetermined range of the first boiling point; and thereafter

b) activating a remediation system, coupled to said enclosure and responsive to said possible high voltage electrolysis when said monitoring detects a likelihood of said possible high voltage electrolysis, to decrease risks associated with said possible high voltage electrolysis.

6. The responding method of claim 5 wherein each said battery module includes a plurality of series-connected energy storage elements, wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis is responsive to energy from an internal short-circuit between a set of elements from said plurality of series-connected energy storage elements, and wherein said remediation system includes one or more overcurrent protection devices disposed in series with said set of elements with at least one of said overcurrent protection devices opening said short-circuit responsive to an operation of said remediation system.

7. The responding method of claim 5 wherein one or more coolant pumps distribute said coolant solution through said coolant distribution systems, wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis includes electrolysis of said coolant solution disposed inside said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system, and wherein said remediation system includes enhanced activation of said one or more coolant pumps above a baseline level to add additional coolant solution into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system responsive to an operation of said remediation system.

8. The responding method of claim 5 wherein boiling of said coolant solution changes said predetermined ratio to produce the second boiling point for said coolant solution higher than said first boiling point by boiling more of said first liquid than said second liquid, and wherein said possible high voltage electrolysis includes electrolysis of said coolant solution disposed inside said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system, and wherein said remediation system includes a port coupled to said enclosure and independent of said coolant distribution system to permit addition of a remediation liquid into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system and wherein said remediation system couples said port to a reservoir of said first liquid and dispenses a large quantity of said first liquid into said enclosure outside of said coolant distribution system responsive to an operation of said remediation system.
