Method of manufacturing a wiper arm assembly having a locking member
View Patent ↗A wiper arm assembly and method of assembly thereof includes a mounting head and a wiper arm configured for relative rotation during assembly from a disassembled position to a shipping position, wherein the wiper arm and mounting head are locked against rotation toward the disassembled position once in the shipping position. The mounting head and wiper arm have locking surfaces configured for locked engagement with one another while in the shipping position. The locking surfaces are brought into engagement with one another by a force imparted by a spring while rotating the mounting head relative to the wiper arm from the disassembled position toward the shipping position. When in the shipping position, the locking surfaces confront each other and prevent the mounting head and the wiper arm from rotating back toward the disassembled position from the shipping position.
1. A method of assembling a wiper arm assembly, comprising the steps of:
providing a mounting head having one of an axle or a hub, said hub having a pocket with a locking surface and an open end, said axle having a locking surface provided by a locking member;
providing a wiper arm having the other of the axle or hub;
operably attaching a spring to said mounting head and said wiper arm;
moving said mounting head and said wiper arm relative to one another from a disassembled position and causing said spring to initially increase in preload;
moving said axle into said pocket through said open end and decreasing the preload on said spring; and
bringing said mounting head and said wiper arm into a shipping position by moving said locking surfaces on said mounting head and said wiper arm into confronting engagement with one another under a force imparted by said spring, said locking member extending from said axle toward said open end of said hub while in said shipping position and said locking surfaces preventing said mounting head and said wiper arm from rotating from said shipping position back toward said disassembled position.
2. The method of claim 1 further including attaching said axle to said mounting head.
3. The method of claim 2 further including molding said axle as a single piece of material with said mounting head.
4. The method of claim 1 further including attaching said axle to said wiper arm.

The method of claim 1 further including providing said pocket with a pair of walls spaced facing one another and engaging one of said walls with said locking surface of said locking member when in the said shipping position to prevent rotation of said mounting head and said wiper arm back toward said disassembled position under a torque force.
6. The method of claim 5 further including spacing said walls sufficiently from one another to allow said wiper arm to be rotated past said shipping position in a direction opposite the disassembled position wherein said locking surface of said locking member moves away from said one wall.
7. A method of positively locking a wiper arm and mounting head of a wiper arm assembly against rotation relative to one another from an assembled shipping state back toward a disassembled state, the shipping state being a state where the wiper arm assembly is generally ready for attachment to a vehicle, the wiper and mounting head being biased toward one another in the shipping state under the tension force of a spring and if not for the tension force imparted by the spring the wiper arm and mounting head being able to fall apart and return to the disassembled state, the mounting head having one of an axle or a hub, said hub having a pocket with an open end for receipt of said axle and the wiper arm having the other of the axle or hub, said axle being received for rotation within said hub when in said shipping state, the method comprising the steps of:
providing said mounting head with a locking surface;
providing said wiper arm with a locking surface; and
bringing said locking surfaces into locking engagement with one another under the tension force of said spring to prevent relative rotation between said mounting head and said wiper arm from said shipping state toward said disassembled state.
8. The method of claim 7 further comprising rotating said mounting head and said wiper arm relative to one another from the disassembled state toward the shipping state and causing the spring to increase in tension prior to reaching the shipping state.
9. The method of claim 8 further comprising translating said locking surfaces relative to one another into said locking engagement along a substantially linear path under a tension force of said spring.
10. The method of claim 7 further including extending one of said locking surfaces outwardly from said axle.
11. The method of claim 10 further including configuring said one locking surface to extend from said axle toward said open end of said pocket while in said shipping state.
12. The method of claim 10 further including providing said pocket with oppositely spaced walls and providing the other of said locking surfaces on one of said spaced walls.
13. The method of claim 11 further including providing said pocket with an open end and a closed seating surface opposite said open end and maintaining said axle in engagement with said seating surface under the tension force of said spring.
