Abstract

Stabilizing an object in the body of a patient involves the injection of a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) material or other flowable material into the body of the patient so that the material contacts the object. The LCST material or other flowable material then forms a gel in the body such that the object is contained at least partially within the gel and thereby stabilized by the gel such that the object can then be easily fragmented within the body and/or retrieved from the body.

Claims (22)

1. A method for preventing migration of stone or stone fragments in a patient's body comprising: contacting a first material comprising a crosslinking polymer in a flowable form with a second material comprising a crosslinking agent to form a mixture; injecting the mixture into a cavity or space that is adjacent to a location of the stone or stone fragments in the body; transforming the mixture into gel form within the cavity or space, wherein the transformation of the flowable material from a liquid form into a gel form causes the flowable material to form a seal or plug in the cavity or space of the body.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the stone or stone fragments are located in the kidney, ureter, or bladder.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material is cooled to a temperature below ambient air temperature prior to injection.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material comprises a block copolymer with reverse thermal gelation properties.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material comprises polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymers.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material comprises copolymers of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material comprises pluronic acid.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material is a carrier for chemical compounds, drugs, hormones, dyes, or other additives that enhance the effectiveness, safety or functionality of the gel.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flowable material comprises a lower critical solution temperature material.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises an automated or human-operated syringe.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of: introducing a cooled fluid having a temperature of from −10° C. to 20° C. into the body to facilitate breakdown of the gel in the body.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the cooled fluid comprises a physiologically acceptable liquid comprising water, saline, contrast media, or fluid having a temperature below a lower critical solution temperature of the flowable material.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of contacting the flowable material with a degradation modulating material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the degradation modulating material is selected from the group consisting of pluronic acid, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and hyaluronic acid.

15. A system for preventing migration of stone or stone fragments in a patient's body comprising:

a flowable material which remains in a liquid form below about a temperature inside the body of the patient and which forms a gel about at and above the temperature inside the body of a patient; and

an injection device for transferring the material into the patient's body in flowable form, the injection device having a needle through which the flowable material is forced in a liquid form from the needle into a cavity or space within the patient's body, wherein the flowable material transforms from a liquid form into a gel forming a seal or plug in the cavity or space of the body.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the flowable material comprises a block copolymer with reverse thermal gelation properties.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the flowable material comprises polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymers.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the flowable material comprises copolymers of polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the flowable material comprises pluronic acid.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the flowable material has a temperature below ambient air temperature prior to injection.
