Abstract

Methods of identifying an Ethernet cabling connection that extends between a first connector port and a second connector port are provided in which an RFID interrogation signal is transmitted from the first connector port to the second connector port over one or more of a plurality of differential pairs of the Ethernet cabling connection. A responsive RFID signal that is received from an RFID tag at the second connector port is then used to identify the patching connection. Related connectors, systems and coupling circuits are also provided.

transmitting the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal from the first plug of the patch cord to a second plug of the patch cord over a first differential pair of the patch cord;

transferring the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal from the second plug of the patch cord to the second connector port; and

receiving at the first connector port a responsive RFID signal from an RFID tag at the second connector port.

2 - 3 . (canceled)

4 . The method of claim 45 , wherein receiving the responsive RFID signal from the RFID tag comprises receiving the responsive RFID signal as a phantom mode responsive RFID signal that is extracted from the first and second differential pairs of the patch cord.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the patch cord comprises an Ethernet patch cord.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal is coupled onto the first and second output contacts of the first connector port using at least one resonant coupling circuit.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal is coupled onto the first and second output contacts of the first connector port using a capacitive coupling circuit and/or an inductive coupling circuit.

8 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising transmitting an Ethernet data signal over the first of the plurality of differential pairs of the Ethernet patch cord at the same time that the first component of the RFID interrogation signal is transmitted over the first of the plurality of differential pairs of the Ethernet patch cord.

9 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the RFID interrogation signal is transmitted outside the Ethernet spectrum.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the responsive RFID signal from the RFID tag includes a unique identifier that is associated with the second connector port.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the responsive RFID signal from the RFID tag further includes location information that identifies a location of the second connector port.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein coupling the at least part of an RFID interrogation signal onto a first output contact and a second output contact of the first connector port comprises:

coupling the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal at a first power level; and then

coupling the at least part of the RFID interrogation signal at a second power level that is greater than the first power level in response to determining that no responsive RFID signal was received in response to the coupling the at least part of of the RFID interrogation signal at the first power level.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the responsive RFID signal is a first responsive RFID signal, the method further comprising:

receiving a second responsive RFID signal from a second RFID tag that is associated with a third connector port; and

identifying the first responsive RFID signal as being associated with the second connector port based on a received signal strength of the first responsive RFID signal exceeding a received signal strength of the second responsive RFID signal.

14 . The method of claim 5 , wherein a first component of the RFID interrogation signal is transmitted as a common mode signal over the first differential pair and a third differential pair of the Ethernet patch cord and a second component of the RFID interrogation signal is transmitted as a common mode signal over the second differential pair and a fourth differential pair of the Ethernet patch cord.

15 . A system for identifying a patch cord connection, comprising:

a first connector port having a plurality of spring contacts;

an RFID transceiver;

a second connector port having a plurality of spring contacts;

an RFID tag that is associated with the second connector port;

a patch cord having a first plug that has a plurality of plug blades and a second plug that has a plurality of plug blades, the patch cord connecting the first connector port to the second connector port;

a first coupling circuit that is configured to couple an RFID interrogation signal that is received from the RFID transceiver onto at least first and second of the plurality of spring contacts of the first connector port; and

a second coupling circuit that is configured to couple the RFID interrogation signal from the at least first and second of the plurality of spring contacts of the second connector port to the RFID tag.

16 - 17 . (canceled)

18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the pair of conductors of the cable comprise a first differential pair of conductors, and wherein the first coupling circuit is configured to couple the RFID interrogation signal onto at least the first and second of the plurality of spring contacts of the first connector port and a third and a fourth of the plurality of spring contacts of the first connector port as a phantom mode signal.

19 - 30 . (canceled)

31 . A method of providing identification information for a communications connector, the method comprising:

transmitting an RFID interrogation signal from an RFID transceiver to a remote connector port that includes an associated RFID tag via a resonant coupling network that couples the RFID interrogation signal onto at least one pair of conductors of an Ethernet cable; and
